Hmm, I've found 2 more settlements on the same planet - those are also apparently owned by another player. I noticed however, that every single settlement I have found have the same progression as mine - a landing pad(star port).
So I definitely feel like something is afoot here.
Later I'll probably try to go to my settlement and see if I can abandon it or something. Sucks now that I already have a lot of hours put into it, but I'd rather do it on a nice planet since it seems to be a very long-term commitment and we can only own one at any given time.
Maybe I'll check the experimental branch as well. :)
The way to fix it, is to warp away from that settlement - when you're far enough away - in the log you'll see the option to reset the settlement mission. Same way we reset other missions.
Should tell you up front that I needed to warp a really long ways. After about 8 jumps, I quit counting; and just kept jumping until the reset option appeared in the log.
Immediately after resetting the settlement mission in the log, I got a new message for a settlement. Was not owned by anyone; but ymmv and your new settlement could be owned by another player and then you need to repeat the steps to reset the mission.
Really wish we could have some clarification on this.
Oh and to clarify, I've used 4 planetary charts by now - all of which were claimed by another player.
Edit:
Experimental branch made no difference, sadly.
Settlements do generate randomly all over the universe, sometimes multiple per planet, they work like any other POI in the game. Once you've gone far enough into the settlement quest chain then you can wander off to any other settlement you find and claim it which will abandon your previous one.
Even if we go to the same one, she can seize it. I still get the "other player's settlement" message.
So yeah, I think those that have the same issue as me - our saves are probably corrupt in some way or another.
Edit:
Some clarification, I'm much farther into the quest than she is. I'm working on my 3rd building, she was working on her 1st.
Oof, I got the message a few minutes in after the update launched. Maybe there's a prerequisite you haven't met yet?
Though am not sure what that would be as I haven't done any of the major quests yet like Artemis or Atlas.
I was just flying around in space when it popped up.
Um, the "unlock point" is pretty much the first thing that happens when you log in. You get a distress call, go to the settlement, fight sentinels then claim it. There's not really any "skipping ahead."
In fact, my second game I just fought sentinels and then left and claimed a different settlement because I am not about to try and build in lava-land.
My understanding is that you won't ever find one on a discovered planet.
