Why can't i take control of settlement?

I followed icon to settlement, spoke to NPC and fought some drones. Now NPCs thank me and say that overseer job is vacant. Mission says to become overseer via the settlement hub interface, but there is no option to do so at interface. Is this a bug or am i doing something wrong?

There's a floating icon which will take you do a building with a console in one corner. (I THINK), interact with that.

I was lost and confused for fifteen minutes or so.

Cheers but i did do that. The console is called the settlement hub interface. When i click on it there is only the option to report the name. Could it be that someone else owns it? I've found another settlement but have the same problem. Also, only the original settlement has the mission icon.

I am having the same problem, have you found a solution yet?

Same issue here, there is two icons, one gold for the quest that leads to center of the settlement and where you would see the name, the other icon is in the corner and is black, in my case always says that someone owns the settlement. I have yet to come across a settlement without someone owning it already. I have also tried buying a new map or whatever from the space stations, multiple times. Just led on a hunt from one owned settlement to another.

Yeah, i found the solution. Turned out settlement was already taken by other player. What you need to do is buy "settlement planetary map" from cartographer at space station. Try and find a nice planet in unoccupied system and use planetary map to find settlement. I returned to my original system as I've never seen anyone there.

I'm on a planet discovered by me in an uncharted system and I still get settlements discovered by other players. It might be straight up bugged sometimes.

yeah I spent all day visited countless settlements and every single one of them says that is is another player's settlement. I found an unexplored system and went to the planet that it directed me to and the settlement there and it said that it was another player's settlement. I tried reporting the name to see if that did anything and it changed the marker to a different settlement on the opposite side of the planet. I flew over there and it says the same thing. So unless 2 players have claimed settlements on this completely unexplored planet in an unexplored system, I am thinking the settlements are borked.

It was a general answer for both of you. The other guy asked if i found a solution and I simply stated what worked for me. It's not all about you.
