Did I Just Get Killed By A...Tornado?
I have spent the better part of a year away from this game and came back to check out some of the new stuff. Apparently the "new stuff" decided to check me out too. I got a notice while exploring a planet in the early game during a toxic storm that there was a "severe wind event." I didn't think much of it...storms have always been storms in NMS, right? Next thing you know I'm airborne and being tossed about all over the place. I tried to use my jet pack to get myself back to the ground but no luck. Then I find myself moving rapidly towards the ground and even using short bursts of jetpack to try to stay in the air, I got splattered. Yeah, that's new!

So my questions

1. If caught in a "severe wind event" is there a way to survive or should I just enjoy the ride and the splat at the ened?

2. I've seen one or two others - one was a "wall of flame" or wall of fire or something like that. Are these events also potentially deadly (beyond the high temps)?

2. Not really. Severe Winds are the most disruptive. Walls of Flame will just set grass on fire, so you should be fine as long as you don't stay in one place for too long.

Nothing a few S class Defense or Mobility upgrades won't trivialize. Good to have a few down the road, or if you ever decide to settle one of those planets.

I'm speechless 😂😂😶😶

Yeah the tornado can kill you, well the fall can. I used the jet pack to slow my landing. Also have used the terrain manipulator to build a quick cave.

a fully upgraded jetpack ... the basic model may not be enough.

Fire and meteors can damage you as well. Meteors are easy enough to avoid, as long as you see the red circle before impact.

If your jet pack isn't upgraded well, be sure to pulse your engines. to conserve energy as you fall, so it is just enough to slow your decent to survive the fall.

edit: i have a really high base if i'm not careful is a lot of tornado's around the steep slopes and need to pulse myself to safety often when there.

Heads up !
I was just flying around an unknown planet then !
In the safety of my ship.
I got a warning of a wall of flames in the post.
I carried on flying (Minding my own)
Suddenly ! My ship did a 360.
I was still okay, and pretty much going in the right direction.
Best stay in your ship, when the storms are a brewing

Get a few shield upgrades and never worry about fall damage again.

You are also not safe inside a base with open doors - the tornadoes will suck you right out. They also seem to be able to find you if you are stealing their storm crystals. But remain calm {LOL} and ride it out, save the jet pack until absolutely necessary.

I think my 3xperimental branch version has a bug or 2... i think ?

Meteors are "always" off in the distance. If i see one land about 900 away and quickly jetpack over, no meteors will land in that spot, only see meteors off in the distance.
And no "red circles".

Lightning strike are the same as meteors, only off in the distance.

Tornadoes... have not seen a single tornado yet.

Only reliable "close proximity" environmental effects that happen, grass-fires and volcanoes.

Hoping Next Generation update has fixes for me.

Tornadoes seem to spawn in groups.
I have been picked up spun around and spit out into a second tornado. It was glorious!
Sorry you died though. Max S class jetpack upgrades are a necessity for survival.

I say this with experience as my first AI planet has sever wind events. Got killed 3 times.

But you can avoid getting killed when you get caught in the vortex.

1. Relax
2. Point your camera towards the ground.
3. Start short pulsing your jetpacks when the ground starts rushing at you.
4. give one last short burst of jetpack before you meet the ground again.

Hopefully your planet do not have predators after you have landed.

Tornadoes are fun! Best random event ever....I guess if you don't die.:steamhappy:
Got picked up by a terrornado last night, my jetpack is fully upgraded with S-Class modules,
I tried to thrust my way out of it and eventually succeeded, only to hit the ground with too much force , dying...
Bought 3x S-class shield upgrades just moments later, I'm ready for terrornado round 2.
I think I'd prefer lightning over terrornadoes after that ordeal.

I've been caught in several and never tried to power out of one; rather the opposite I guess, just enjoy the ride saving your thrust to prevent a high speed collision/sudden death. <- I think a better way to help survive is to install at least 3 "A" class (or better) Defense (shield) upgrades. On Normal you're almost a tank; they are all but required in Survival mode.

Oh and of course the most useful jetpack upgrade, the Airburst Engine
