Astroneer has a more linear upgrade path as you improve your terrain deformation technology. There is an end goal, though getting there mainly involves doing the same thing like 7 times.
Both games are pretty chill and fun in their own ways. Even after all I've typed, I feel they're fairly different enough that they don't compare well. They're each their own game.
yeah i think i will get this.
... But No Man's Sky is infinitely better. Quite literally. :D
I played Astroneer earlier in its development, before they removed storms and before they made the controls wonky. They took a step backward IMO. Even then it was difficult to find a reason to visit all the planets. Instead of giving me a compelling motivation, they just added more stuff to craft and an annoying way to research them. The current reason of putting that giant alien thing together is not very compelling, just an excuse to make you do stuff. I actually think the art style is charming, so that's not my reason.
Empyrion was fun, but admittedly I haven't played it recently. I think they've made a lot of changes since I last got into it. It also suffered the problem of having a limited reason to go to other planets. Combat is better in Empyrion both on ground and in the air. The base and ship building were much better than NMS too, but planetary design, economy and alien interaction are better in NMS.
Thumbs down to Astroneer, while Empyrion and NMS do different things well.
BTW: I honestly prefer this game, but I astroneer is also good game if you want some "relaxing" game with an hidden grind which reminds me of the early NMS builds.
Astroneer has basically the same exact story, and progression; thematically and aesthetically its very similar; as i said, its just simpler and its really up to what your style is.
