Na, what he was refering to was an old exploit of sorts. You would save RIGHT before doing your 5th warp, as that is the warp you can get your first freighter. It used to be that you could get any Class of frieghter and it wasnt decided until you actually warped there. So if you saved before and you got one you didnt like, you could just reload your save and try again. Could start with an S class for free that way.
You can still do this. But now you have to decline the first freighter fight mission.. and then you have to play for 3 more hours and five jumps before you'll get the new battle option. That's when you want to save the game right before warping into your 3 star economy system. Then you can reload until you get the class you want.
I got this one for free just recently on a new save I started for Origins.

Hmm, I was always told that if you pass on the first one, you miss out on a free one lol. So I settled with an A class(was the first one that I saved) Damn, ah well.
That's going to be a lot of reloads waiting for an S unless RNGeebus is on your side. Ugh. Count me out. I'm happy with my A.
Also, you need to get a freighter and move on with the game imo. I'm not aware of any way in which having a higher class freighter really advantages you aside from the likelihood of starting with more slots. You'll jump farther with ships, and your freighter will follow you around now.
There _are_ reasons to get an S class freighter though, since these have 25%-30% higher values for the base hyperdrive range, fuel efficiency, and fleet bonuses.
Those bonuses still don't justify save-scumming for me (I'm happy with my A class freighter), but if you want the best of the best, then yes, you need to hunt for an S-class freighter, as there is currently no way to upgrade your freighter's class afterwards.
True, On my other two saves I have A class freighter so this time I wanted to see just how many reloads to get an S and it only took 36 reloads.. wasn't bad at all actually.
Really happy with the Fleet bonus on this one.
Just be aware that you can only have one freighter at a time, so when you switch to a different one, you will lose whatever upgrades and buildings you put in the old one.
probably not "trading up"
First: Class wise, A > S only affects Jump Range, but Capital Class ships have increased slots right off the bat, and a better natural maximum slots than Regular Freighters. Capital Class being the Sentinel/Battleship/Dreadnought and Venator/Imperial/Resurgent designs, they are also just the best looking ones IMO.
Second: The Base Salvage module works for swapping Freighters, and gives a full refund unlike Base Computer deletions, so the only reasons not to upgrade is if you genuinely like your regular freighter, or simply don't want to spend time praying to RNGesus and in rebuilding, which are perfectly valid reasons. Your materials will be safe regardless.
For some time you have been prevented from putting too many refiners close to one another, just like large refiners got slightly taller a year or so ago. Well, anyway, I have a lot of refiners too close to one another.
