Best way to go about base building?
Hey guys, so I've been trying to get into NMS and particularly building a base but I find myself constantly in search of materials and going back to the space station to buy them (I assume mining is even longer to do)

. My question is, is there a way to make material gathering faster that I'm unaware of? Like does NMS have automated mining systems? Any help is appreciated

One thing I always do is collect the rusted metal when I open the green boxes. It refines 2 to1 into ferrite and that refines 1 to 1 to pure ferrite. Pretty easy to collect it along the way as you explore, and you end up with more than you need for building nice cuboid rooms.

Cuboids work best with power and the storage containers. One wire from your power source will connect the whole building and anything that needs power inside.

There is automated mining, but not for building materials.

Consider building a storage container which becomes available after putting a base computer down.

Get a freighter, get 2 or 3 maxed out haulers and hop to star systems that sell a lot of building materials. Fill 'em to the brim and start building.

If your build involves a great variety of ressources and you want to do it legit, consider building it in creative mode. Many building materials can't be bought or mined. In other modes you'd eventually keep everything well organized in ships and safes and then spend a lot of time micromanaging everything you delete that ends up filling the main inventory instead of going back to where they come from. Not to say that filling and keeping those many inventories full will ask constant micromanaging every time you have an opportunity to gather material.

Yes we have those huge freighters with dozens of frigates that can't be used to gather store and teleport base material, kind of silly. But that's how every features are in the game, they don't evolve past the needs to complete the main mission.

My strategy is:

- Loot whispering eggs/storm crystals

- Sell loot

- Buy out basic materials at every space station I encounter

- Mine for whatever's left over.

I wasted a lot of time the first couple of days actually mining stuff before realising it's a hell of a lot more time efficient to just hunt the good stuff and buy the dross. You can make tens of millions a day if all you do is find and loot egg sites and superstorm worlds.

You can make unlimited resources like carbon, ferrite, and sodium with oxygen. Just mix oxygen and the tier 2 resources together and you'll make unlimited more. All you need to do is have 3-4 oxygen harversters around your base and 3 medium refiners. Just keep the refiners going constantly and you'll never run out of resources while you build.

Find an s-class magnetized ferrite hotspot, which you can refine back into pure ferrite for prefab rooms.

rusted metal can be harvested using mineral extractors and refined into ferrite dust, oxygen extractors can be used to farm oxygen which can be refined 1:1 into carbon.

the basic materials, and more advanced materials like silver and gold can be automatically harvested and farmed easily.

you can even farm elements you cant get through the mineral extractor by growing various plants at a salt farm.

Also many people don't know how to directly connect cuboids and basic materials. Although the "large structure" corridors snap to both cuboids and basic materials, cuboids don't snap to basic materials. To do this you need an intermediate step, using corridors as a template or scaffolding:

You can even direct connect biodomes because cuboids will snap to them directly, and exactly four cuboids will space the biodomes at the right position for direct connection with doors:
