Roll/Yaw/Throttle Controls?
Heyo! Coming from Elite: Dangerous here. Genuinely would like to to try NMS out, but I'm finding the flight controls impossible.

Is there any way to remap the flight axes? Or *set* my throttle in precise fixed increments instead of having to keep W pressed down?

I'm finding this really counter-intuitive even for an "arcade" style flight model, enough that I'm liable to refund the game at this point. I just can't dig it. It feels wrong, lol. I also use yaw into roll and not being able to convert a tiny portion of my movement like that is playing with my brain.

Nominally my bindings would look something like:

A/D for fine Yaw adjustment
W/S for fine Pitch adjustment
Q/E for roll
i'd set my throttle in increments with the third mouse wheel and have the chance to set it by percentage according to the 1-0 keys at the top of the keyboard.
And then my mouse would be y axis for pitch and x axis for yaw with a roll blended in as I yaw.

This is crazy, lol. How can a game with spaceships as a core element have such bad flight systems? Why even add settlements, etc. if you can't remap basic controls like this?

It's only playable with a game controller...

The spaceship part isn't really meant to be a simulation. It's super simple. If you want a space sim then obviously play something else.

Of course it's a simulation! It's pretending to be a thing that flies, is it not?

What I want is to enjoy the other aspects of the game, like exploration and the general magical sense that inspires, but those are in fact gated behind the flight.

Simulation implies it's trying to be realistic. And it's not. So no it's not a simulation.

It is most definitely aiming for some kind of verisimilitude, lol. From the rain pattering on my canopy and windscreen to the diagetic consoles informing my about my ship status it's certainly trying to give me the experience of being in a spaceship.

Why that program of verisimilitude wouldn't extend to the flight model, I can't quite say. In any case, I've submitted a refund. I'll wait another two years and see if Hello Games gets around to improving core gameplay features like this.

Space flight in NMS is more about getting from point A to B or C, etc. It is not an actual flight simulator.

An option would be to try and set up a HOTAS, I have read from others that it can be done again, but I have know idea how well. Used to work great for me, but since I got used to a controller I haven't bothered to try and configure it again. An option would be to pick up a few side jobs and save up until you can get a controller. I prefer M&K in most games, but they do come in handy. GL

As said above, it's just about going from A to B as quickly as possible.
Aim your ship, engage the pulse drive, forget about it until you arrive. Repeat as needed.

I do perfectly fine with KB&M. Just make sure to set your flight mode to locked instead of tethered. Tethered is intended for controllers and is unusable for KBM.
Ha! Yep KB/M work fine for the simplistic gameplay of NMS. I do fine with it. To me it's just an explore/pickup game. And it's fun. Even whooping up on the criminal star ships is a tad of fun. Even with KB/M!

Unlike ED, almost nothing happens in space. The ships are just a way to get to the next system or planet.

The space "combat" is super simple and does not require any real skill, it is just there to give space a lived in feel. You can actually do best by simply sitting sit and swiveling your ship. They don't run and will almost always come directly toward you.

Even if you find it hard, a few ship upgrades and you can take multiple hits and do one hit/one kill damage.

The game is about exploring. If you want high paced action, this is not your game.

I didn't like the mouse control, I normally fly with my arrow buttons on BF and GTA, but after a few hours its not bad, I still get the buttons messed up especially in 3rd person lol. I do wish I could re configure the buttons but its not terrible, especially since you can just hold down S and it the ship will lock onto targets. I haven't tried to fly with controller yet.

What a bunch of d1ckbags replying to this thread.

For those of us who have used gamepad for arcade flight combat games, the way that NMS has hard coded the pitch and yaw controls onto the mouse or one of the gamepad sticks is utterly ridiculous.

For those who have built up their muscle memory on arcade flight games CONFIGURED THE PROPER WAY, NMS flight is largely unplayable, which is exactly what many of us will choose to do, (i.e. just NOT play it) rather than 'get used to it' and sit fighting out muscle memory for dozens of hours.

"oooh...if u want a flight sim why don't you go and fly a real spaceship" What a bellend that Xartax must be.
Wew, you're that bad at video games? Huh.
