There are essentially two ways to get an exotic ship.
A. Put in time exploring and waiting at space stations and trading outposts (the ones with 7 landing pads) until an exotic flies in. It will eventually.
B. Collect all the glyphs so you can use a portal and then go online and watch a youtube that shows you a ship you like (or the portal exchange) and get the glyphs and travel to that system and watch for the exotic of your choice to come in.
Personally, I love exploring and finding my own ships. It takes time, but I get a sense of achievement when I did it myself. But that's just me.
The only tricks I've found is to put down a save beacon at the trading post and keep reloading until one appears. Also, make sure your own ship is on the ground as it allows one more ship to land on the landing pads.

Are Trading Posts better for finding them than space stations? Or is either equally good?
First, look for "wealthy" economy in the galaxy map. The spawn rate is 1 to 2% chance for exotic. there's only ever 1 at a time in a system. It's possible you will have to go through up to 220 ships before you will find an exotic.
Do note, there's a few ships placed in the universe that you can freely claim. Though it will require you to know how to use galaxy coordinates, and it's not truly free. You will have to spend fuel and time actually finding them...
Anyways, the offer stands if you or anyone else wants mine. I'll eventually replace it with a white exotic when I get bored enough to actually go searching. I won't be on until tomorrow though.
