It's a random encounter that will warp you to a far away system. If you found it once in your current system it will likely pop up again if you pulse around enough. All relic gates in a particular system will warp you to the same destination.
Its funny when a noob gets one of these (and they use it).
I'm not a noob but I have never ran across one of these OR I had no clue what I was looking at.
Imagine going through one of these without knowing how to use teleportals, space stations, freighters. Its mind boggling. Critics call NMS shallow, but I'm 1500hrs into it and still finding new stuff.
This was yesterday:

LOL That would be pretty hard to wrap your head around.
In Expedition Two I had only just left the first planet and fell into one before reaching the space station. I got too close not realising I would be whisked away. I was totally disorientated but managed to complete the visit un-visited systems for the Expediton Phase. :D I got back to continue the Expedition using the Anomaly or was it a Teleport (I forget which) and choosing in multiplayer another player's Rendezvous base. Fun unexpected times.
Watch out in Space ! :D
I forgot they suck you in. The first and only time I saw a Relic Gate, I was a noob on my first save, only a few days playing. I encountered that and gave it a wide berth, no no no.
Do they move you closer to the core?
I believe it is random, and can send you away from the core.
How funny. I'm always trying to fit my ship in crazy places.... LOL I can't imagine encountering this without poking at it. I must have not seen one yet. That and the fact that it is obviously a portal.
