Character turns on its own
So sometimes my character starts turning in random directions even though I am just pressing W. I have no controllers, steering wheels or otherwise installed.
This only happens in this game. Ît almost seems like the character is trying to follow the terrain?

How do I disable that? It's so damn annoying!

Options > Camera > Comfort > Third person camera movement. Set that off.

For the movement correction when walking towards, that seems to be a permanent feature. Can't do much with it.

Just use your jetpack to climb/pass through harsh terrain instead of brute forcing it Skyrim-like

Use jetpack to traverse hillsides

It's not 'extreme' turn. This is average turn that I have to deal with constantly. I am constantly correcting my characters path...

So how do I disable that?
Let me rephrase that... it's extreme compared to what I experience in my game. The slopes in the video didn't appear to be a high grade, yet the character ran in an arc. I do not experience it that heavily in my game, unless a little steeper slopes. Maybe the video didn't do well to portray how steep they were. There is no way to disable this.

I can certainly see how this can be annoying. Maybe while I play I unconsciously just auto correct my direction. (which is probably true, a lot of years mashing on WASD) I also naturally jetpack over some tough terrain as well.
Anybody got updates on this?
I reinstalled the game because I felt like giving it another try but immediately got turned off by it again when I got reminded of this issue.

It bothers me a lot that my character moves on its own.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ghorq8qGlEg Here's a video showing what I mean.
I didn't touch my mouse at all. The only thing I was doing was holding down W to move forward.
That's a pretty extreme turn in that video. What generally happens is anytime there is a slope in the terrain, the character will not move in a straight line, but will curve on its own. Path of least resistance if you will. You need to correct your direction when walking over uneven terrain, at least from my experience.
That's totally the slope doing that to you. It probably doesn't look as steep as it is, because the camera autoadjusts to compensate so you can still see infront of you. Depending on the world you're on, it can get pretty extreme. That said, most people don't just walk around. You'll never notice the effect if you're jetpacking everywhere.
Why does the game automatically turn the character though? If there's an obstacle in the way the character should keep on walking against the wall.

I can make adjustments on my own, I don't need the game to do that for me. No Mans Sky is the only game I ever played so far that does this.

Especially for small rocks such as the one 2 seconds in, the character should move over that, not around it.

Haven't tried the game in a long while. I'll try jetpacking around more when I install the game again.

it's not that the game is "automatically turning the character", it's that the terrain is angled and forces the character to turn. This is normal videogame physics. NMS just has more angles in its terrain, so it's more pronounced.
it's interesting seeing wot 'little' thing is the 'last straw' for someone else

Yeah! Total misunderstanding of simple game physics. If you come against terrain you can;t go up, the character will move what ever direction is the slightest angle. Nothing at all wrong with the game.

Yeah! Total misunderstanding of simple game physics. If you come against terrain you can;t go up, the character will move what ever direction is the slightest angle. Nothing at all wrong with the game.

Every other games makes your character simply stop or keep walking against the terrain. It doesn't make your character turn. This has nothing to do with "slightly angled terrain". This also happens with large rocks, as can be seen in the video. Whenever the character collides with something, the game corrects and makes the character move around the object. Not to mention that the slopes, as seen in the video I posted, aren't even that steep for video game standards.

This happens in barely any other game. I challenge you, load up any other game and try it out.

The real problem with this is that the movements aren't slight, they completely change the direction the character is travelling in - Even in first person.

Imagine loading up battlefield or CoD and your character suddenly changed direction without your input, that'd be weird wouldn't it?

Any Rockstar game. Challenge completed and I didn't even have to think about it.

You can actually see both examples in either Read Dead or GTA. When running up against the terrain, your character will veer in the direction the slope takes you, but if you run strait into a flat wall, you just run in place against the wall.

The big difference here is that NMS uses HUNDREDS of triangles in an small area due to how the terrain works. It's very different than other games in this aspect. This is 100% the angle of the terrain effecting your direction.
Not sure if we are talking about the same thing here but my character did this on level ground... nothing to do with the terrain at all. I would start walking by pressing w and after a couple seconds it would start turning to the right on it's own. There is a setting, someone above mentioned it... It stops this from happening. Worked for me anyway.

Great answer^ I can't speak for other games but I know in NMS when my feet are hindered from moving where I want to go, I'll engage the jetpack to continue on the desired direction. Its totally 2nd nature I don't even think about or get annoyed by it.
