how do you organize your chest?
I'm trying out organization by color, unless its a trading item.

The fact that you used the word organize, tells me you don't want to see my storage.
Just sayin. :/

Since I play normal, I carry all common resources with me (oxygen, ferrite, carbon, etc). Then I organize by usage (crops) rare items, crafted commodities, etc.

CHAOS is my strategy….. however, you will never see me NOT color match my player and ship

I don't try anymore, but I saw a suggestion recently that may help if you want to - leave container zero empty, so when you use menu options to put stuff in storage, they will all go there, for later sorting.

Otherwise, they'll just go to the first empty slot they happen to find, undoing any sorting you've done.

You can name your storage containers. If you want them organized you have to start the habit and use it on every save. My storage names:
0 Farm Crops (and catalysts)
1 Odds & Ends
2 Metals
3 Nutrition
4 Not used/Overflow Odds & Ends
5 Crafting
6 Gases
7 Craft Rocks
8 Water Stuff
9 Not used

I keep a lot of stuff in my extra suit storage. Until you max out storage you have to just catch as catch can. Anything for the ship goes in ship storage (emergency beacons, defense chits, Trit, Pyrite, uranium, hyperdrive fuel, etc.

I wish the Game Had AUTO Sort just for the boxes .. It would make it a bit easier on us.
Just a thought.

I use a color-based organization too. i can't think of a better one, and it's helped me a lot going in and out of the storage containers. The last two hold all sorts of objects, instead of stores of minerals and so forth, but the others are color-coordinated.

@Happy Monkey, that's a great idea, leaving zero empty!

They fill up too fast so I only organize them according to my goals of mass production. That way, I can stay on target.

I myself have everything well sorted within the containers, and named them. But I kept nr.0 mostly free and named it 'Inbox'. All to often I have to sort everthing I send there over to the other 9 containers, which usually has space for all the mats in its the slots I already made my system for them. If only the game could see where the mats already are, and fill up the slots - THEN put in the next available slot - it would save me a lot hard work and swearing.

This is one of the most irritating ever repeating tasks in NMS.

I do it generally by color, with a few exceptions. Works for me, plus you can color code the vaults / freighter rooms to hint at what's in them.

By type (elements, plants, craft materials, etc) as best I can, in alphabetical order on my storage containers.

On the subject of storage.. If I build "Storage 1" on planet A, then build "Storage 1" on planet B, do they have access to one another, or is it just a separate Storage 1?
Dirak2012 Sep 15, 2021 @ 1:10pm
You can build 100 "storage 1" across multiple galaxies and all of them will have the same content.

It's like a Minecraft's Ender Chest, if you've played it. If you haven't, it's a globally shared chest container (the items inside are the same everywhere).

Elements and minerals have a container all their own. Crafting materials get a couple to themselves. Then odds and ends (like relics and cosmetic base items) have a couple, and then one just for overflow.

I have things alphabetical as well.
