Trident key - useful for upgrading? How?

Roaming around a new underwater base I came upon a submerged ancient ruin with a blobby Refracted Light object floating over its platform, from which I received a Trident Key. When I hover over the key in my inventory it tells me that it's 'useful for upgrading.'

Any idea of what it does and how to use it? The wiki page, updated for the Abyss version, doesn't say anything about its being 'useful for upgrading.'

Look for a bigger chest in the vicinity, you need this key to open it.

The "upgrading" tag is misleading, but that's because of how locked chests function. Chests have "component slots" filled with locks, and the keys are used as the "upgrade materials" to fill those slots.

Actually the game is faulty here: you will find more of these Trident keys than necessary (3 IIRC), but only 1 needed to open the chest. Maybe they have another usage which I don't know. Try to refine them, maybe you get nanites :)

Nope. The multiple keys is likely a mitigation factor. There are cases where bedrock will cover one or more chests. If there's only one spawn per ruin, that leaves a pretty good chance that that ruin can never be used. Same principle behind the extra keys on surface ruins.

You will find 3 chests at each spot. A moon pearl and trident key are required to open them. Also you can make an offering of an abyssal horror eye to the voice, and get another goodie. I make a habit of finding all of the underwater ruins I can. The key does not upgrade anything. Been a couple months, but that's how I've always done it.

Thanks for th info, I'll try to think about it when I'm ready to go underwater. From past game actions I had the impression that you were able to find more keys, but only needed 1 of them, but your info is much more precise.

I'm having trouble with the Patterns of Time mission. I have the co-ords found the site, found 3 chests but I can only get a maximum of two keys from the blobby apparition, one on different days. Any idea where I can get a third key? I'm fed up with Crab carapaces

I came across the "blobby apparition" and obtained a Trident key (never seen before in 700 hrs) at an Ancient Ruin on dry land, a parched planet in fact.

I read the the usage note and so didn't go chest hunting.
