I know of no tricks to finding them. Just kindof random when I run into particular planet types.
Usually radiated, nuclear, hot planets and similar (anything nearer the sun) are very likely to have cactus plants. So scan the planets nearest the star generally first. Scanning though should be very quick to scan all planets in a system. At least you won't have to land on them all to see.
Cactus flesh = barren.
Star bulb = lush.
Frost crystal = frozen.
Solanium = scorched.
Gamma root = radioactive.
Fungal mould = toxic.
If the plant is not listed its either a dead or exotic planet, and should be fairly obvious from the name.
Which planet spawns is almost completely random. Lush and dead planets being slightly more common, and exotic planets not normally spawning in yellow systems. Other than those 3 all the others got equal chance of spawning in any system
