Note that your scenario can happen wether you join a MP session or when you play SP with online connection. If everyone can see you, they can retrace your location in the Nexus and follow you :) In both cases it's important to have set the MP options you want.
Of course you could be so unlucky to have met the only player in the universe to do such a thing.
So ruling that out there needs to be another reason.
Other reasons bases might appear corrupt are because on very large bases moving around quickly can interrupt rendering of objects. Teleporting about a base you might see missing walls or decoration items have vanished. A reload of the game usually fixes that.
Under options you can now set the rendering of graphics from Standard to Ultra. This will lower performance on a less capable graphics card but make objects not pop in as you move about.
Sometimes while building a base, objects in the background might be unknowingly selected and accidently deleted during construction, while pressing buttons and navigating quick menus. Especially if controllers are very sensitive and camera angles are awkward and there may be lag.
Deleting objects can also sometimes delete objects attached to others like switches or lights attached to walls etc.
Using mods can also corrupt files. Generally it can be useful to back up you game save every once in a while. Bases can be restored using Mods. Also sometimes there can be a delay from uploading a base to the server and it being visible on the local PC. Usually visiting another system then returning can help. Also uploading another of your bases on the same planet will switch between the current base and the next. Then uploading the former again might clear the 'cache'. Display of bases can be a mystery but it is good to remember only the last uploaded base will be visible.
No, absolutely not. The danger of mischief from players with bad intentions is real, just read again my post above where I say the Nexus will reveal the system you came from. Also Gumsk's post above.
That's info enough for those people to do mischief, it's difficult and time-consuming for them maybe, but doable. That's why you should care about your MP settings.
