Everything interfering with online connection of the game is prone to cause crashes or malfunctions. So: Have a super-stable connection, and make sure your bluetooth for headphones is not connected via internet which you don't need, you set this in Windows accordingly.

I encountered simiar problem. Wireless headphones just didn't work (no sound), wired headphones or standard speakers worked. Did not help to change Windows settings, even Win 10 per application sound setting forcing to wireless headphones did not help. Not sure what is causing it. No problem like this on other applications.

Game itself worked just without sound. At the end I just used wired headphones (though not optimal for VR).

I have GoG version though.

In Windows 10 it's in the settings "Bluetooth and other devices". Your headset should be "coupled" but not "connected". Connected would mean it has access to internet and it's taking away traffic for the NMS connection creating problems when starting the game. The result can be an error message and the game will not start, or something like in your case sound leaking etc. Once the game has started traffic variations are not that critical, but at game start yes. I know because I use to connect via smartphone to give the game online connectivity, and at times it's not stable enough unless I play with pure WLAN connection.

This has something to do with the settings on the Windows, have similar issue on other games.

Something that fixed this issue on other game are by re-pair-ing headsets, and/or disables the mic of the headset in the sound settings

Another possibility is to just set a rule in your security suite impeding any internet access to your headset.

Run mmsys.cpl and look for the stereo and hands free settings. I'm not at my computer, but you need to disable one of those and select your default device.

If you are using a Bluethooth Headset :

Bluethooth Headset have normally a Stereo and Hands Free option.
Currently only the Stereo Option seems to work in NMS.

Right mouse click at the windows symbol, there choose Run and
type the the following : mmsys.cpl

This opens your Sound Control

There disable Hands Free for both Input and Output.

That did work for me

the stereo does worked and the sounds sucks, i tried multile times, going back on forth to mmsys.cpl and disable the stereo and set the hands free for default, no result

If you disable Handsfree (for In&Output) and enable Stero only than it should work.
http://prntscr.com/u2o1f5 here you should see and choose the Stereo device
