Can someone tell me how attacking sentinels works?
From my understanding it works like GTA's wanted level with more and harder bots to kill or escape from.

I haven't died yet, so I don't know what happens when you do, but are they strong?
I heard there is an infinite amount of them that show up when wanted. Do you kill the current ones and then escape?

I don't really want to engage them yet but I need a walker brain.
Any info, tricks or links to webpages are appreciated.

The mechanics for combat with sentinels go like this:

- "Aggressive sentinels" found only on some planets will attack you first as soon as they see you;
- Normal sentinels will not attack you first unless they catch you mining stuff;
- Once you attack them, the combat 'Level' will raise to 1 or 2 (level 5 is the highest)
- At Level 3-5, other than sentinels, also dogs and walkers will start to appear and it make it tough
- The combat level only ends and retruns to 0 if you successfully hide from sentinels, leaving planet will not end combat level until you manage to go further away
- Entering a building will end combat level except level 5.
- Moving away from sentinels will make a counter appear, if this counter reaches 0 the combat will end unless sentinels detect you again. Doesn't happen in Level 5.
- To escape a level 5 combat you must leave planet and evade sentinel ships in space by moving away from them and entering space station, the Anomaly or your freighter.

To sustain longer combat with sentinels you should have your exosuit upgraded with shields and have good multitool weapons like your boltcaster upgraded and grenades which are very effective.

Some important defensive info:

Do your mining from a distance. The sentinels are dumb and will investigate the site and never find you.

Work from the top of buildings or your base when aggressive sentinels are around. They will eventually find you but you can do a lot of scanning or mining before you get caught.

When you will go to an extreme sentinel world, best to get a station mission with a known building. Then just keep moving from building to building until you complete your scanning.

Never go to space if you have a wanted level- unless it is 5 stars. Just fly around in the sky until the timer runs out.

Be aware that stealing valuable items (like grav balls) will immediately trigger a sentinel response. Be prepared for a hasty retreat.

Best to leave them alone unless you just want to enjoy pissing them off.

Wanted level is temporary....lasts only as long as their alert timer is running, usually a minute or two. Sentinels suffer from Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. They are also very nearsighted. You can stand about 30 u away from something and blast at it in front of a sentinel and they won't trace it back to you. If you keep their attention, by staying within their short range of sight/awareness, you can progressively get more difficult waves of sentinels, each wave representing the next higher "Wanted" level:

Level 1: the unarmored sentinels that are normally patrolling the landscape
Level 2: 2x armored sentinels
Level 3: 2x armored sentinels plus a quad sentinel (the dog-like ones)
Level 4: Tall Walkers plus level 3 critters

Level 4 will repeat as long as you keep your wanted level open. It is easy to close though, just fly away and park somewhere. The space sentinels are easy to ditch if you want also. Just don't fight them and go wherever just like outrunning pirates.

Also if not at level 5, simply go in your ship and fly away without leaving planet to end combat (or as said go in a building).

Thanks!

May I add an idea?

If I dig a hole before the sentinels come and then do a bit of mining or steal the Grav Balls, will this evade them? Plus if I use the Terrain MT to fill in the outside of the hole I am hiding in will this make me safe?

Or will they and can they borrow in after me?

Lovely Questions J...

You used to be able to hide out in a hole...but they seem to be able to sense you and attack through the earth now...even hiding is a cave they can sometimes sense and attack through the roof.

i created a maze on the ground with a base above the maze. On a planet with aggressive sentinels and gravatino balls. this way can pop in and out of buildings on the ground with powered doors that close. and roam my maze or shoot down into it sometimes, and use several teleporters get to a safer spots away from the sentinels, when in a jam and go back at it.

MR BUFFERLOW:
Wow thanks for this. I wonder if you need to tunnel deeper? Just a thought.

JALORE:
I'd love to see that base!! sounds wicked dude.

Fascinating solution to use these teleporters to evade aggressive sentinels...Really cool :)

JAPP:
Indeed Jose indeed.

Suppose you could use the mini teleporters as well.
Set it all up before doing an inital raid.

As I said earlier, Hes put forward some cool questions.

Nice one.

Nice shot! Especially with the vertigo ;)

And this set up keeps the sentinels off you?

What happens when you die in the Normal Mode anyway?

Is it a big deal? Or easy to get playing again?
I know you keep your bits and pieces, bases and cash etc. Well I think so.
Is there a limit to getting killed?

Jalore Jul 16, 2020 @ 6:31am
Playing in normal mode, if die in normal mode you have to do a item run to your grave its marked on your map you spawn from your last save point. i keep save points all over my base. the maze it helps to slow them down, as they try to navigate the maze when on the ground. if i die it's usually because i blew myself up with the plasma launcher firing it point blank by accident. if die you can get to your grave really easy as the sentinels are reset after your death.

Think i had bugged out the sentinels for a while a bit ago. they stopped spawning due to killing so many i guess or not collecting all the canisters, yet.

the giant brain walker has a difficult time managing the maze so it is fairly easy than straight up one on one. but is lot of walls to duck around or a base to hide in to recover when at level 5 alert due to all the sentinels that spawn. i concentrate on the smaller ones first then go for the walkers armor and they drop fast. especially with the plasma launcher upgraded heavily.

Sometimes launch the bouncing plasma balls from above at my landing pad down into the maze and they bounce around till hit a sentinel... but sentinels can fly up there so have be careful none sneak up on me from behind.

the flying sentinels will stay on the ground if you are and can corner them one at a time easier. the dog sentinels fire in straight line and are very hampered by the maze making them very easy to kill. walker fires at an angle downward in the maze so is easier to duck and get away and fire from a different point or fly over to another point in the maze if want. all at once maze helps break them up especially if teleport around as they search for you.
