Q: Savegames & AppData 'cache' folder?
A: Yes, the .dds files can be deleted without messing up your savegames. Doing this while the game is running will force-wipe those .dds files from your Steam Cloud storage, freeing up considerable space. The side effect is that you lose all your discovery thumbnails. So it's a trade off between keeping your thumbnails, or being able to upload your base and/or additional savegames.

Does anyone know if the 'cache' folder @ \Users\***\AppData\Roaming\HelloGames\NMS\***\cache really has anything to do with saved games? Can it be safely deleted without messing up your saves?

Bonus question:
Does anyone know exactly what data is actually stored in all those hundreds of .dds files in the cache folder?

I would assume the cache folders works a cache for faster loading.
.dds are the texture files the game uses

hi

the "cache" specific folder. i don't believe so.

the files inside the random#folder, with the .hg extensions i believe are.

best to just backup the entire appdata NMS folder, before doing anything.

all the best.

The reason I'm asking is because I can't upload to the Workshop due to my entire Steam Cloud storage being taken up by my current game. I'm wondering if maybe the 600+ .dds files have something to do with it.

I am not quite shure, but i deleted the folder some time ago and afterwards the Icons near the list of scanned creatures, waypoints and Flora had been changed into a white rectangle. In a later patch, HG introduced a default Icon for the discoveries. Seems that the Icon are somehow a sort of ingame screenshots stored in the cache folder of the gamesave.

Oh, of course! That makes perfect sense. I wonder if all those little thumbnails are being uploaded to the cloud along with save game files.

I just tested this, and yes, the contents of the cache folder are synced to the Steam Cloud. No wonder I can't upload my base! :spazterror:

Well, more or less. I forced the Cloud to wipe all those .dds files, and that freed up enough space to upload my base. The problem still remains that HG has a pitifully low storage limit on the Cloud. NMS has a 20 meg limit, whereas I have no-budget indie games in my library that have 1 GIG limits. :steamfacepalm:

FYI, the .dds thumbnails were sucking up literally HALF of my total Cloud storage for NMS.

Well, if disabled the usage of the steam cloud for NMS a long time ago and saveing a backup of the gamesave local. OK, if you want to play at another PC, you have to copy the last backup first, but this is not a big problem for me. May be it is a also a workaround for you ;)

Grrr. That was a lot of work for nothing! My base uploads now, but when I subscribe to it in the Workshop and load it, there's nothing but an unclaimed base module. I give up. :angry_creep:
