Freighters, S class starships and weapons are supposed to be stretch goals.. Not something you pick up after a few hours of casual farming.
As an aside, my wish for the next patch is other courses of making decent money aside from farming. Perhaps more extensive mining equipment, and definitely a more in-depth economy.
I'm not certain about this, but if you defend a freighter defeating the pirates then when you see the Captain offer to buy the freighter without accepting rewards. I think it can be cheaper depending how quickly the battle was ended and the less destruction the freighter took.
A couple of tips:
Use as much freighter and or 48 slot haulage storage to buy and sell trade goods between different economies to gain profits.
Build your scanner analysis recipes to gain hundreds of thousands of units for flora/fauna scans on every planet you land on.
Search out crashed ships to increase storage and repair slots instead of buying fully functioning ships to 'save' units in the longer term.

I tried my best not to hit the frieghter, but I must have hit it at some point. Because after saving it, it remained in lock-down and kept calling for sentinal support against me. At first I flew into the nearby space station and waited around 30min, but as soon as I left the freighter just called in new backup. Then I destroyed around 10 hostile starships, flew down to a planet and an hour later when I left it was still hostile. After reloading the entire fleet had just disappeared
WTF is up with this game mechanic..?
As far as I can tell saving it had no effect on the price and neither does the choices you're presented with afterward.
Accepting the gift awarded a random amount of units and warp cells.
Declining the gift awarded +1 reputation with the dominant faction.
Asking to directly buy the freighter strips you of all rewards without any additional discount.
No matter the choice the price was locked at 214 million for this C class 28/4 freighter.
Update 2: Got to save the exact same freighter from pirates a second time and the price is still the the same. So I'm starting to doubt if it makes any difference at all.
