What is this icon and what does it mean?

I see this circular white icon a lot and it doesn't seem to indicate anything at all. It shows on places I've explored and places I haven't. I've been struggling to figure out if this is just a bug or if I'm really missing something.

It's just a beacon marker. If you activate a tall tower (and some other buildings) they permanently give a marker so you can get bearings. Some buildings also detect other buildings, and so you can activate the beacon-markers on places you haven't visited.

it's a general marker that means scanners have detected something there. sometimes they'll pop up as you are flying along, sometimes they'll show up when you are scanning with your visor.

it's just a way of seeing scanned stuff on your HUD when you may not be able to actually see it.

it's a little marker. what difference does it make how many pixels it's made of? personally i'd be pissed if they chewed up all my system resources trying to make high res dots.

It's a pokéball.
You mean that white dot at the center of the screen right? It just appears when you scan the structure with your scanner. They used to be alot smaller, now they are just anoyng, atleast for me. Oh and they dissapear if you restart your game. It seems to be bugged to me especialy as when I Charter and save at locations the markers do not change to their respective locations nad if I restart some location icons stay unfaded even if I have discovered them.

That's the custom marker you get from scanning a sctructure. It's supposed to stay on that structure until you scan a new one, but it doesn't, it moves around as you do and highlights random things until you leave the planet/system/game and come back. It only shows up if you've scanned a sctructure, so if you don't like it don't scan any and you'll never see it.

Seems stupid.

It's not "stupid" it's bugged.

Bugs are stupid.

Pre 3.2 had the same thing working the same way only it was really tiny. It's found me some drop thingys. Sometimes it helps. Sometimes it marks where you were. It was like that before.

Yes, I hope they fix that "shows you places you've already been" bit, that's much more annoying than how it looks. Though maybe it's just a placeholder for now. But I definitely don't want to be directed to places I've been, unless I deliberately drop a beacon there.

If you fly slowly above the planet, the marker keeps jumping onto other buildings on the surface you haven't visited. I am still trying to understand things with the update, like how come the waypoint green question marks "?" stays "?" forever, even if I discover them. The spaceship scanner is an absolute trash really, once I can discover an abandoned building on a planet a gazillion miles away, but on the surface, it won't pick up a damn thing right front of the ship, but instead, it'll show me a "?" 30min away on the other side of the planet.

At the moment all markers on planets are a total *mess*, broken and confusing rather than being informative. Silly is that the '?' for sites you have visited will remain, confusing you about what to visit next. And these white markers sometimes appear, sometimes not, so you have to rely on your eyeball to discover hotspots. And here again, impossible to say if they mark something new or not. :(
From what I've read of the upcomming 1.33 patch notes for PS4, they intend to revert all this to the Pathfinder method, plus the ability to 'scan ships' whatever that means.
