How do I use the starship scanner?

Hey all, I need to use the starship scanner to locate dark matter but I just can't figure out how to. The hint in the bottom says press /!\ to use the scanner, like it has no button assigned. I changed the visor scan button, maybe that's why it's not showing? but that does nothing when i press it anyway. I tried changing it back also. I must be missing something obvious. Do i need to find an upgrade kit?

C key. This will give you a waypoint to a nearby building which you can't see by yourself, but it will not show you everything all the time, so hit in repetition. Also watch your radar scope to locate trading posts, where there are ships usually there are crash sites or posts. The ship scanner doesn't need upgrades AFAIK.
You can also install an Economy Scanner in your ship which will give you a waypoint to a trading post, but this one must be operated from the Quickmenu.

And no idea what you mean with 'dark matter'...
