Can try another base in another system and see if you can place it if you do not want to go the above route. Depends on how much you have done creatively etc. Can also delete the base and rebuild it as well if you have done nothing "special".
Oh also there is a bug where base parts disappear a reload of a save brings them back into view.
You accidentally pressed the place button while not looking and it got flung somewhere in the environment. Easiest way to backtrack if you haven't built much is delete the base and start over. The longer way would be to hunt around until you find where you placed it by accident....that could take some time, or it could be quick depending on where it ended up.
Also, you don't have to get storage containers via the quest, you can get them in the Anomaly directly if you don't want to do the starter quests.
