I have the exact same issue happening. Also, when they enter the game, their Anomaly is completely empty. They cannot play multiplayer at all.
Have you found any solution yet? Still nothing working so far for us.
I do have issues grouping, I tend to have to send a steam invite to my wife and she can join that way.
I've noticed if you start a solo game, and your friend hosts a multiplayer game, if you back out to main menu the session should appear.
Ensure you've got multiplayer enabled in network settings and "can join" to friends/invite only.
Must be the forums fault.
Check firewall settings to ensure game is permitted. My antivirus blocked the connection first time I launched the game and I didn't realize it. I had to unblock the application from my AV before I could see others in the anomaly or co-op.

At least it will explain a lot of things to a lot of people, but you really need to watch it till the end and pay attention to the details ... ;-)
