The mission never got updated in game, it was always at the step "take a photo". I thought the game was waiting for a system event to happen so I tried different things. I shared the photo on my timeline, didn't work. Waited until photos automatically uploaded, didn't work either. I checked all the Xbox options regarding photos, couldn't find any more options. I just gave up, deleted the mission. Must be another bug they need to fix.
In Steam, you can use F12 to take a screenshot, but that doesn't satisfy the quests. You have to use camera mode, then left-click.
Yes, I'm using the Xbox function with camera mode. I tried everything. With, without. I tried with the camera mode after hiding hud, without hiding hud, you name it. Nothing worked.
Lol the button camera mode tells us to use is the Xbox screenshot function.
Hated the ones that wanted a picture of the monolith. The little ones don't work but I took a gob of pictures thinking I just did not have the right distance or something. Finally came across the one that asks you a puzzle question and got the green light.
Then I found another planet with "Caustic" for Environment. But it didn't work then either.
I found another planet with "Caustic" in it and took a pic after getting out of my ship - it worked.
I have no idea why, or what the variable is, or what the mission is 'looking for'; but the mission does work. Just keep plugging away at it and it should fire off sometime. As post #10 stated above, even though a Planet may seem to meet the criteria, it won't for some reason, but then you'll find one that does and it completes. I'm sorry I cannot help with more details than that at this time.
Keep at it though. GL out there, Travellers.
Edit 1:
I found this, in regards to the different Screenshot modes not working
https://www.reddit.com/r/NoMansSkyTheGame/comments/9232p1/for_those_having_trouble_with_take_a_photo/
Edit 2:
I also found a Thread stating you have to use the in-game "Camera" to take the pic, not the user client interface (eg. NOT the Steam screenshot shortcut button assigned in the Steam Overlay, and NOT the Xbox client screenshot utility). Perhaps this can help those not being able to complete these Missions.
Edit 3:
After more research on this, it appears to be bugged for XBOX users. Normally, they would hit X, then dpad over to the Camera icon, then after moving the camera around/etc they would hit the Xbox button, then Y to take the screenshot - but this is the XBOX overlay/client function, not the in-game 'take a picture' function.
For PS4, if you have it "setup for "Easy Screenshots" (press share = screenshot) it won't work. To get the game to detect a "photo", you simply need to hold "share" and that's it. You don't even need to actually take the picture - simply quit the UI menu and the mission will get updated" ((quote is paraphrased from that linked page above)).
For PC, hitting Z brings up the functions menu, then WASD moves over to the Camera function. Clicking opens the Camera interface, then just clicking the mouse button takes the picture (do NOT use the Stream Overlay Game Client shortcut key (eg. F12), it will not trigger the Mission to complete, as some have experienced anyway). On PC, click with the mouse in Camera mode (it will still take a "Steam Overlay" screenshot to share, but it also will complete the Mission).
For XBOX, some Suggestions, that have worked for other people:
» Try hitting START and not the XBOX button.
» Try holding down the button, not just pressing once (this works for some on PS4 apparently).
» Try opening the Share menu and pressing Triangle.
HTH
Like "deliver this package 3 systems away", but selling the package made more money than the mission reward was for.
Hey, thanks much! Haven't tried any of these, so can't say yet if any of them work. But I just wanted to say thanks for all that legwork. Really appreciate it!
