Pirates would chase you into the atmosphere back in the day and you could fight them. They were even worse on deck so it was more of an easy win tactic then a challenge.
Unless they change their stance, the Devs have been very persistent in NOT making this a shoot-em up game. That is why I enjoy it. The world is full of those, especially Sci-Fi. Nice to have a little different offering.
you shoot a mining beam at everythinng
random aggressive creatures: shoot them too
pirates: shoot them too
random space encounter: shoot it too might have something good
Locked Door: shoot that too
sentinels: shoot them too
other players: shoot them too (if so enabled but I'd rather not)
missions from station agent: go shoot stuff
missions from nexus: shoot hazardous flora/monstrosities/even more pirates
There's a lot of shooting to be done.
Yes, there is shooting...it is just not a primary factor of the game. Except for a small group of missions, most of which you can decline, you never have to hurt any fauna or NPC. I guess I don't consider rocks and plants mining as something exciting to shoot at. Shoot-em ups always have another objective requiring some sort of destruction of angry life.
Ehh, as it is, there isn't much incentive not to fight back: Walkers become significantly easier to avoid if you break their armor off, I've often found it more of a hassle to lose aggro by running or hiding rather than just fighting back. Granted there's incentive to not try and escalate fights, as it's easier to escape if you don't fight back and once you got good shields you can basically waltz into any secure location while just facetanking two basic drones' attacks as you blast down a door.
So that all said, not being combat-oriented shouldn't preclude them introducing more enemy variety: enemies that encourage different approaches, making Quads less janky, enemies that can setup a way to de-escalate a fight without having to run or wait for 60 seconds, enemies that are equalizers that you need to escape from and can't counterattack - it's just as much about making the game more combat oriented as it is about making it less.
I would definitely like to see more of combat. More sentinel enemies, more creature enemies, more everything.
Ground combat is a snoozefest. Absolute snoozefest. Space combat is a bit more fun but still a snoozefest once you upgrade things.
Id also like to see a variation between hardcore mode and normal mode where if you die in space, you lose everything, not just in your ship, your inventory, but also most of your stuff breaking, on top of losing your ship itself for good if you die in space. On the ground if you die id like to see you lose all your upgrades, all your inventory, and have reductions to your mining abilities and if you die again, you lose half of your money, then half again if you die again.
I dont know, something like that. But if they improve combat alone dramatically id just play ironman over and over. They have left out combat for far too long in my opinion and this game has three aspects.
Exploration, economy, and combat. So far they have only made exploration and economy good but what completes the two together has and always will be: Combat.
If they simply made upgrades far more stabilized and improved the severity of storms and such, I'd definitely start playing again. But right now with the way upgrades are kind of sprawled all over the place and C B A and S can all be just plainly skipped over all the way to S upgrades, it kinda just ruins the gaming experience for me.
I would love to see a leveling system where you level up and as you level up you can choose to improve certain upgrades up to B A and S.
