total n00b in Creative Mode, need a bit of help...?
I just fired up NMS for the first time in Creative Mode, hoping to be a space tourist and just kind of enjoy the different worlds and aliens without having to do the heavy resource-management campaign (apologies to those who love this stuff, but for me it's so Yaaaawn). This sort of worked... I seem to be unkillable and never run out of ammo for shooting asteroids. But it appears that I'll never get away from my starting solar system unless I do enough campaigning to build a warp drive. Dammit. I'm grounded. I was hoping Creative Mode was a bit more flexible than this.

Since tourist travel is my only motive for owning the game, I would like to find out how I can get that warp drive with the minimum of grind. Really not interested in the campaign/strategy aspect :-) just in it for the scenery and space travel. Can I pick up a pre-made user profile somewhere with warp drive enabled? Can I edit a game file to turn on warp drive?

Second question: in my first session I wandered around a bit on a very cold planet, got bored, flew up into orbit and visited a space station, killed some asteroids (collecting various metals), then landed on a different planet.... or tried to! couldn't get the darned spaceship to land! I've done a lot of flight simulator time so it's not like I don't know how to land a plane :-) but despite hard braking with D key, nose up, etc, I could not get the ship to slow down and ended up bouncing off the scenery in clouds of dust. Very frustrating. Anyone have a tip for the rank beginner?

Second question: NMS is not a flight sim, ships are more for getting from one place to the next. On an Xbox One controller, L trigger to brake and X to land. For M&K I believe the same would be S and E, but I could be wrong since I never fly with M&K. You could check your key bindings to be sure.

First question: Yes, there is a save editor which would allow you to give yourself the warp drive(s) and other things, but at the risk of making the game too boring to be playable. Use at your own risk... ;)

Good luck in whichever you choose to do.

First question: are you talking about the hyper drive? It should be in your list of installable technology. There's everything. You can also upgrade your ship to maximum for free to have enough slots. Warp cells? Just click them in your inventory and craft as many as you wish.

In creative mode you have everything for free except for quicksilver.

creative is for building really.
play normal, its like creative with more structure. follow the story its quite interesting (or not you can still wander but now u will have access to the Anomaly which is itself a vast resource), and with the vast amount of resources you won't notice the difference too much. Don't limit yourself by being lazy.

In creative mode you can also do all the missions and have access to the Anomaly.

@Capt Brendig... thanks, DL'd the tool, will try it out. I'm a tourism gamer so don't find it boring just to wander around looking at stuff :-) I have over 800 hours on Euro Truck Simulator 2, which probably tells you all you need to know.

@Lallantle... I did check out the menus of available upgrades but they all had notes on them like "requires FooBar (0/125)" which seemed like I had to go collect 125 FooBar in order to build the upgrade. Can I ignore those notes? Can I just buy whatever I want at the space station on unlimited credit? Woo hoo!

Thanks for the tips, folks! I know tourism gaming is not everyone's thing but I really enjoy it. There are several games I'd rush out and buy tomorrow if they had a pure tourism mode (Skyrim, Witcher, Red Dead, Mount and Blade...). Maybe should change my forum name to "Twoflower" :-)

UPDATE tried the save file editor and it worked like magic. Terrific! I now have hyper drive and can wander around the map! I've been meeting aliens, giving them presents, learning a few words of Vy'keen, and taking easy delivery missions. It's great fun -- comic book sci-fi, very nostalgic. I was impressed to find that my avatar can go scuba diving in that exosuit: there are underwater biomes to explore as well as dry land. I found a wrecked ship on one planet but have no idea what to do with it.

In creative mode will I see other people's bases, or are lazy creative mode players locked out of the shareable universe?

One of the great things about this game is that you can play how you want. So if tourism is your thing, then go ahead and have fun. It is your game after all, so as long as you are enjoying it that's all that really matters.

And yes, you should be able to see other bases as long as they were uploaded in Creative mode.

What is FooBar? I never get notes with my upgrades that I have to collect something in creative mode. Strange.

FooBar is programming term for a placeholder value in a command.

Thank you. Learning something new each day :)

check NMS Coordinate exchange on reddit to find bases using the portal system. search for creative base and that should point you in the right direction.

Thanks again, very nice of y'all to help out the completely clueless. Must say this game is a visual funfest and must be awesome with VR. I haven't had the guts or cash to pick a VR system and invest, though I'm super curious about it and just waiting for the market to settle down and prices to get more reasonable. Seems to me VR plus a basic office treadmill would be hugely immersive, you could be walking while you play and so have physical engagement as well as visual.

Anyone playing in VR mode? what's that like?

Nice discussion ... I am also new here. In Creative Mode, you only start with the basic. You need to install Tab to see your tool, back pack and space ship and E to see the upgrades. The Hyperspace upgrade is there and use no materials to install unlike the normal play , you would have to find the plan and get the materials and install the hyper drive.

My basic installation are : Hyper Drive for the ship, for the tool, The advance drill ( the big pill ) to get minerals in the ground and also get technology undergrounds and a way out out of the cave , the terrain manipulator and the gautlet , to get the big plants and dangerous one. The rest are the upgrades if I got the space. You have to find bigger back pack and ships to place more stuffs.

The Creative Mode is good for base construction, but also to wonder around without getting kill by the local weather, local wild life and local wild flora and the "Sentinels" and Space pirates .

Yeah I'm not that interested in getting killed :-)

imho every game should have a Tourist mode.... so many gorgeous open worlds out there now, I just want to go hiking through 'em. especially with all this covid stuff, lockdown, no travelling, etc... gimme Great Big Open Worlds! but please, not so much with the edged weapons, scary monsters popping up, complex inventories of stuff to keep track of, etc. these worlds are worth visiting just to appreciate the artistry of the devs (and to find the cool easter eggs that are almost always lurking somewhere!).
