New player, how do I "turn" the starship?
I know how to roll, how to move around, and I am an experienced space sim player... How do I use my thrusters to strafe, or turn the craft? I don't see any key maps for it, however I DO see mappings for "turn left and right" online in older key maps.

Is using a controller easier for No Man's?

If you mean you want to have the spaceship pointed in one direction but moving sideways, you can't. The ship always moves along the same axis that it's pointing at. You need to use the mouse to turn.

You use the mouse to steer.
Move the mouse in the direction you want to turn the ship.
You can try using a controller, but if it's easier I think is a matter of opinion.

I find using a controller much easier when playing No Mans Sky. While the controls may not be as in depth as some sims I have played as well, the controls are not as bad as some I have played too.

You're joking. For real, right?

NMS is really not a fighting game, and most of what little action there is, is on foot. The ships are just to get you from place to place. Yes, you can have shootem ups with pirates, but it is almost impossible to lose once you get a decent ship.

The easiest strategy is just to stay in one place and take them out as they come at you...so dog fighting is completely optional and unneeded.

No. No... NOOOOOOO. Bleh, great game besides the ultra annoying fact you can't orbit a target ala Elite Dangerous. Thank y'all

NMS is not a flight sim.

There are 2 settings in the game options for flying your ship, try out which best fits to you. I had to change the default setting.

No setting allows ships to do what he's asking.

Maybe not, but this has not be mentioned above and he could be satisfied. Then, there is the mod section. Straffing and howering was possible with mods in past versions. You'd need a updated mod version.

Everything related to combat/space combat is beyond terrible in NMS. If you are looking for action, you are playing the wrong game. NMS is more like a mega chill game where you use some nip nip and just slide along. Try the base building, that can be fun especially if you glitch build.

I get that and I totally dig NMS for what it is, i'm liking it. I just try to stay away from space.

I got the impression there was more to the space sim part for no other reason than my own assumptions - based on all the updates. With the Living Ship thinger, I figured space was a fully figured out fun part of the game, maybe not full on sim, but a core part of the experience.

It's fine, maybe one day they'll add in that geewhiz "turn left in a ship" feature. Please?:steamhappy::steamsalty:

Given the responses I got when I suggested our ships shouldn't slow down in empty space, I doubt people would accept more realistic physics.
