The salvage capsule was first and foremost a form of material recovery for players loading up their existing save files when NEXT was released. NEXT deleted everything, including the freighter internals and since the freighter has no 'delete' button (unlike the base computer) there's nothing there for a player trading in their old one to recover.

Maybe you can use the save editor to 'back up' and 'restore' the old layout? As long as you have yet to overwrite your Manual Save it should still be there, waiting.

I've already lost loads of stuff today (died in survival), adding more to the list isnt much more hassle.
I've almost got back everything I've lost so no real harm done, just cost me a few hours mining stuff.
I'd be more worried about getting things back in their original positions. A free-standing aquarium is nice and all but I very much preferred it when objects attached to a specific point on the floor!
