If you do not have a freighter, unfortunately you will have to GET a freighter to have access to these ships.
Warp around systems until you find a space battle going on, and then help the freighter that's under attack. If you do not already have a freighter, you will be given that freighter for free.
HOWEVER, note that your ship will not immediately show up in said freighter. I recommend flying to a space station, getting out of your ship, get back in the ship, and fly back out and then summon your new freighter to cause it to reload its contents and then when you land in your freighter, your ship should be sitting there, ready.
How's that? If you have exchanged it by accident then it's LOST, gone with the NPC who will take it so to say, you won't see him flying away, the ship is still there but you cannot interact , it's not your ship anymore and if you reload game it has disappeared.
What you can do is reloading your last manual save, you will lose progress but you regain your starter ship.
If you didn't exchange it, then you for sure can summon it using the Quickmenu (on planet surface only).
Having a base with a teleporter is now crucial and is part of day 1 tutorial.
This won't work for the OP.
The OP made the broken ship his current ship, and repaired it enough that he could fly off with it. If you save/reload, or fly away from a ship you leave sitting on a planet, it will actually despawn. You still have the ship, it's counted in your player's "inventory", but you can't find it anywhere.
If he uses a teleporter, it will summon his current Primary Starship, which is the ship he found.
His starter ship, which is out of launch thruster fuel, can't be summoned. Unless, maybe he built a landing pad and used a navigation data to summon it instead.
Either that, or a freighter is the only way to get it back.
If really you lose your current ship then it's a new big bug, I don't believe it until more players report it...
This game should be made Peggy 50...
not really, he can simply enter a station and melt his current ship until it auto selects his starter
That's like saying if your light switch doesn't work, you can always set your house on fire to get light to see.
