And once you find a portal, mark it with a beacon or you won't find it again after interacting.
so i have to go to the same monolith twice?.....
No, just after finishing your 1st dialogue with the monolith, use E again to re-enter dialogue a second time. Then, if you have the necessary item it will be part of the dialogue to chose from, chose it and a waypoint towards a portal will be set. (If you don't have the item yet, place a beacon, get the item and return).
Be aware that the 1st dialogue with a monolith is a quiz; if you fail it by chosing the wrong answer you are not told so, and no 2nd dialogue can be chosen, you would have to go to another monolith.

Portals aren't at monoliths. You use the monolith to locate a portal using a specific item dependent on the dominant life form in that system.

You can purchase a map from the cartographer on the space station to find the monolith; be sure to get the one for alien structures. Otherwise fly around and keep your fingers crossed. ;)

i know how to find monoliths, the monoliths are not giving me a option to find portals. i'm asking is there another way to find them other than fly around and hope for the best because i've been doing that for most of the day.

so i have to go to the same monolith twice? but it won't let me interact with it a second time and i'm not mixing them up with plaques.
The author of this thread has indicated that this post answers the original topic.
