Save Editor Will Not Work...!
Can someone tell me how this thing is supposed to work please.. I d/l it, installed it, all fine but it will not "find" my saves.

NMS names their saves like this... mf_save.hg , mf_save2.hg , etc , but the the stupid editor keeps telling me there is no slot 1 save... so it won't load ANY save I try to load, What is wrong with this damn program, or what am I missing here...

Thankyou...

I doubt this will help but, SLOT 1 and save1 are not the same thing. In fact there is no save1. For reasons best known to HG the order is save, save2, save3, ... The odd numbers appear to go with autosave, while even go with manual save. So you seem to only have a single manual save that goes with your only game. The order of the SLOTS is not obvious. For me there are SLOTS 1,2,3, and 5. No 4 for some reason. They are not in any obvious order.

I don't use the bat file, I just double click on NMSSaveEditor.jar.

If you haven't already, you could delete everything associated with the save editor and reinstall. If you've done that and still no joy, then start another game in NMS. I suggest Creative mode. Play a few minutes and make sure you put down a manual save point. Further, make sure you enter and exit your ship once (autosave) and save once with the manual save. Exit your game. You should have two more full sets of saves in your save location.

Now try the save editor and tell us what happens. Good luck.

OK I may have found it. The answer seems to be in this thread: https://steamcommunity.com/app/275850/discussions/0/3658515990060887542/

Try this:

Open Save Editor. Don't select anything.
In the menu up top, go to FILE. Select OPEN FILE/PATH.
Make sure it's pointing to your save file folder. Select either the save.hg or save1.hg file there (whichever is newer.)

That should populate the drop downs properly.
If this works the OP should be horse whipped.

That's helpful. As in, not.

The point is the Save Editor does not always automatically sense the save files when you start it. Especially the first time you run it. That's a bug, not a feature.

I have always had to select the folder that the save files were in. After a while (do not know why) when I open the save editor I am in the correct folder, BUT I still have to select the save file before editing it. That is a bug? Wouldn't one normally try things like clicking on the File tab just see what's there? If the OP did not, then perhaps pity would be better.

There are five save slots, in order, but the default display of your save games is in order of last played, so it is hard to see in-game. The save editor is displaying the actual five slots in slot order. A couple of different mods change the sort order to get rid of the last played sorting, in which case you would be able to see empty slots like that slot 4.

That does NOT work, as I have tried, and said..

I have tried all that. That was why I backed up my original save folder with my first 2 playthrus and started a fresh one, and the editor still does not work. Also, for what it is worth, altho I have a .save and a .save2 file the editor only shows the [slot 1 - [empty] save.hg , when I go to file, open...

Open the Java Console (through Start > System) and see if Java is activated. You need Java 8 installed.

Check that your antivirus (or Windows Defender) will allow the editor to do operations on your system (open files, write files, access internet for updating the program). If you have never seen the update pop-up of the editor when starting, then your antivirus is blocking it (and not only the update).
Then, if for some reason your savegame folder is write-protected it will also create an error message, you need Admin rights on your system, to check that I would try to see if NMS currently does save the game in this folder (save game and check the date of the save files.)

Allow the editor to update if such a window pops-up when you start it (did it already? It should), this can take 1-2 minutes and it will start itself again after update completion.

As I have said, I have the latest java installed as I am notified when an update is available. I also tried the editor after disabling my antivirus software, but I have never seen any of these update pop-ups you mention. Yes the game is saving in the correct place, that is not the issue.

I didn't ask you to install Java, I asked you to open the console to see if the right Java version is activated (check box for Java 8 in the console activated among other versions), so do it please.

That's the right Java version activated, yes. Best you should do now is visiting

Input a comment here explaining the situation. Normally Goat Fungus, the author is responding in regular fashion, and he can tell for sure what's wrong. Good luck.

Why do you need a Save-Editor?

Well originally I wanted it because I read you can use it to change the colours on freighter etc, but now it's also on principle. The thing is "supposed" to work and I want to know why it is not..

You can't use it to directly change the color, but you can change the seed to another ship/freighter seed with the color you like, if you have one.

And yes, I totally understand the obsession with trying to figure it out just for the sake of solving the problem.
