Why is nms.exe Trying to remote connect to amazonaws.com
Anyone know why the NMS.exe would be trying to make a remote connection using TCP to amazonaws.com? It shows it is trying to open a web page, this happens when i am in the middle of playing the game, only started happening the last few days and seems to be random.

Not sure if i should select allow nms.exe to connect, what do you think, is this normal?
I do know i have remote connections shut off, don't want any remote connection to my machine, I want to select do not allow but not sure if the game will fail to work.

Do not allow. i have never heard of this before. Would also highly suggest you run your antivirus and do a deep scan.

HG maintain servers to support the discovery and Anomaly services. Maybe the connection is for these online services?

If you are currently blocking the connection then you could check in-game on the discoveries page to see if there is a green or red circle to the online discovery server? BTW for Windows 7 there could be another reason for a red circle! (I think) also check in the Nexus to see if you have missions that pay Quick Silver for the weekend event (a green mission)?

Don't understand what your getting at, what is HG? I still have the alert window up and just haven't selected allow or deny yet, was waiting to see what people said. I am also confused when you say online discovery server, i am in game not on a web page when this happens. But if you mean the discovery's in the game then yes i believe I was using the F button ingame to upload my discovery's and after i had got this alert when i exited to desktop.

HG is Hello Games, the devs of NMS. No, there's no reason NMS should be trying to access an Amazon website. Sounds like a virus or malware.

Amazon Web Services https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amazon_Web_Services

It is perfectly possible for the game's developers to have decided to implement https connections within the game. What protocol would you have used?

The only way to be sure is to block the connection and see if anything breaks. Also you could try raising a help desk ticket?

Right... because no company would use AWS for cloud computing services... oh wait, Netflix, Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitch, Reddit, Activision, and Epic Games are just a few of the companies that use AWS for various things.

yeah its normal. can confirm. like the majority of social media and streaming, they too, use amazon servers.

All I said is I've never heard of this happening. I have never gotten any kind of window asking me if I wanted to allow nms.exe to open a connection. I do not know for certain, but there's nothing wrong advising an anitvirus sweep. I'm not a programmer, nor have I ever looked into the uses and applications for AWS. So, there's no need for you, TheBoot, to be a condescending ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥.

Ive heard of AWS, but would still advise a antivirus sweep because even when discoveries are down I have never had the game ask to open a connection.

If the game tried to open a TCP session and your firewall software raised an alert dialog in the background for an outgoing connection then it is most likely that you have effectively blocked that connection from being established whilst the game was running?

It says it is a TCP connection. If you go to that web address it's some type of service, check it out. > amazonaws.com

Everyone in this thread already has and always will have amazonaws running and/or accessing your system as long as you have Steam installed, regardless of what game you are playing. Steam / Valve officially uses it here on the forum, the Community HUBs, in your profile Activity Feed, on your profile, and obviously in nearly every game with Steam In-game capability. They use it to help scan for porn, un-tagged adult screenshots, profanity and other stuff they don't want children seeing.

You used to be able to deactivate it, or more accurately, tell it that you don't want things being hidden from you, via the "secret profile settings menu," but it doesn't really work anymore. Either the setting no longer saves, or it gets reset every time Steam updates (every 2 weeks).

Shortly after "the new Steam" and the new pretty Client went live, the menu got changed to remove all the broken settings options and the options for amazonaws were moved to your Store Preferences menu, but it still does not function correctly.

If it was specifically trying to connect to nms.exe definitely put in a zendesk question. While it is possible Hello Games is using AWS it is equally possible that it is a pup or malware as well.

Do you have steam cloud turned on?
Do you have some sort of program time tracker/screentime running?
Another application/web client running while playing no man sky?
Blackboard actually uses it too.

I use steam cloud to back up game progress so i don't lose progress in games.
Not sure what a program time tracker/screentime is, usually i only have Discord running.
Not sure what blackboard is either so i am not running that. Ir only happens when i run NMS.

your right, but the conclusion you came to was before the end of a logical train of thought. so it is still worth pointing out.
