What happens when you reach the center of the universe?
I heard that when you reach the center of the universe, you lose your items and bases and stuff and basically get a soft reset (excluding upgrades)

So if I reach the center, I'll be unable to go back to my bases or teleport to previous space stations I've been to?

There is no 'center of the universe', there are galaxies where you can go to the center to be propulsed to another galaxy, and there are 250+ of them.

You will always be able to go back to your bases via teleporter.

I know that, but I mean in the mission. When I find the "galactic core" and complete the "reach the center of the universe" missions, do I lose anything or is it just another galaxy?

Center of the galaxy, not universe. What happens is you progress to the next galaxy. You don't lose your items or bases or stuff any more and you can indeed teleport to previous locations.
However, if you don't have at least one portal location in the new galaxy, you will not be able to teleport back to it, so make sure to visit a space station and use the teleporter there, not the Anomaly's.
Furthermore, all your technology not installed in technology inventories, as well as your currently equipped multi-tool, will be damaged upon arrival. Some people equip bare-bones multi-tools and ships before traversing the core and then summon their regular ship and swap to their regular multi-tool after they passed the core.

When you finish the storyline you can chose a galaxy type to be sent to - or you can opt to stay in Euclid. Your equipment of your ship and exosuit will get damaged if you change galaxy, that's it, you need to repair, else all your bases and ships and exocrafts are still at your disposal.

YAY! So you're telling me that once I reach the center of the galaxy and can go to another galaxy, I can make a base or visit a space station to go to that new galaxy, then be able to teleport back to Euclid?

Also my friends and I all have all of the glyphs and know the address of our home planet. So if I were to reach the new galaxy and find the portal address, could my friends teleport there without having to complete the storyline?

No. Portals only work within the same galaxy. That's why you couldn't see Apollo, remember?

DANG you guys are being so helpful thank you. So when I reach the galactic centre it wants me to "reset the simulation" what does this do? As you previously mentioned I wouldn't lose anything, that still applies to when I reset the atlas right?

Resetting the simulation, in practical terms, means you continue to the next galaxy. In the game's lore, you are resetting the Atlas and it reboots the simulation, but with different parameters, meaning everyone and everything in the galaxy you're in will cease existing. Again, this is not really the case in practical terms since you can go back to the previous galaxy at any time.
If you complete the Atlas questline, you will have a choice of what type of galaxy you want to go to next. If you go through the core directly, you'll just go to the next one, whatever that may be.

Wow, ok! Also how do I know exactly when I've reached the center? I'm using black holes as my transportation method

It'll be obvious, trust me. If you're not going with the Atlas questline, though, remember to select "Galactic Core" as your goal in the galaxy map when you get close, since you need to be on a specific planet to make the jump. There're some other requirements, but you can find them with a simple search.

I'm on the mission called "the purge" and my mission is to "progress towards the galactic centre" This is the same questline that I met -null- on and Apollo on.

I do have the atlas path, but that also calls for me to reach a black hole I skipped over earlier. That path is for the atlas interfaces to "create a new star" or whatnot, right?

If I have "the purge" selected and it wants me to progress to the galactic centre, I'm doing the right thing by travelling through black holes right?
