That said, you can have more than one tool, so I would keep both until an S class with more slots comes along.
I haven't been MT shopping for awhile, but another thing to consider is the type of tool. Pistol, rifle, experimental, alien.
For instance, an Explorer class will have much farther hyperdrive range as compared to the others while a Hauler will not be able to jump as far, but has a shield bonus instead.
That being said, it seems that most players choose to have a varied fleet outfitted for each ship's strengths. For example, I use my S Class 48/14 Hauler (48 inventory slots, 14 technology slots) strictly to haul massive amounts of Activated Indium from player bases to be sold at stations and trading posts. If the economy for that system isn't paying well for AI, I dock my hauler in my freighter and jump into my Explorer to take advantage of the tricked out hyperdrive to jump to a new system where AI can sell for more money.
My S Class 48/8 Fighter is used exclusively for hunting pirate missions taken on in stations or the Nexus and for committing some piracy of my own when I hunt down NPC freighters for Salvaged Frigate Modules to unlock upgrades for my freighter
My Shuttle is bare bones, no add-on tech at all because it is just for jumping through black holes since BH's can and will fry any add-on tech, but leave base tech unharmed. Shuttles seem to be best for that since they have balanced, but low stats. However, for new players they are a wise investment early on since they have a decent inventory size compared to cost, enabling them to gather more items worth selling for a fat stack early on in the game.
Exotics are the opposite of a Shuttle. Balanced but high stats. I see them as more of a status symbol since they don't really fill a niche for me.
Living Ships are a whole new ballgame for all of us, but they have a high number of technology slots and their stats lean towards high damage, long hyperdrive distance, while having low shield stats.

Not really. The community for NMS is very good at sharing. If someone finds the location of an S Class rare multi-tool like an Alien or Experimental, or a really cool looking S Class ship or freighter, they love to show it off and help others find it. Go check out NMS Coordinate Exchange on Reddit and you'll see what I mean. I got both of my S Class multitools, my entire fleet save my Living Ship, my freighter and most of my frigates using coordinates shared by other NMS players. The biggest challenge in this game is 1 - Learning to navigate the galaxy properly and 2 - Learning all of the recipes so that you can unlock high value items to build using resources from your various farms/mining/atmosphere harvesting bases. Money can be easy once you get further into the story and learn how to portal travel. Then, it's back to NMS Coordinate Exchange to find Activated Indium farms to load up your Hauler with. I just made 3.7 billion units in a few hours that way.
