yeah i know you werent talking about ship skins, but upgrade modules work in a similar manner. meaning that they are all randomly generated from a seed that you cant really reverse engineer easily.
when you are editing an upgrade module in the editor theres a box for the seed for it too. copy the ID number of the module effect you want from that doc into the seed/id field of a copy of that module in your inventory

You can't modify how the ship looks, with the exception of changing the ship seed. You have to find the seed number for a ship you like, and then input that into the Save Editor. That will swap out your current ship model for the one in the seed. But you can't change wings, or colors or anything specifically. It's just seed-swapping.
You can finagle the seeds (as shown above) but folks have warned that it's risky and even then, it's not a full customization. But that wasn't what the OP's question was about.
