Cooking in NMS
How can i choose what food to give Cronus? It only gives me three choices, all animal bait. I had Fibrous Stew in my suit inventory, but it would not come up in the list.

I, too, am hoping for something more interesting or vital to do with food, though.

Food and cooking is perhaps more useful in Survival and Permadeath modes. You can eat the cooked food to provide vital life support.

Food put in storage units and in the nutrient processor storage won't show up for Cronus.
Sounds like a plan, stan!

Although, you would think the devs could come up with a better way then having to offload your inventory in order to make it work. :/

not a typo - that's why I asked the question. I had noted that some basic items were giving stupid amounts relative to the effort.

It's like the words and amounts are completely random: this is like a plank, 249 nanites; then sublime, angels sing 20 nanites.

I honestly think that the numbers are just completely random for any food and they sort of average out over time around 70-80.

For the record, my 100 item test was cactus jelly.

I've tested this out with multiple items and there are basically 3 tiers.

Raw, unprocessed items and low end foods like "Processed Meat" and "Steamed Vegetables" getting mostly low reviews and nanites, and the only tier that will have "0 nanites" rewards. You can get occasional high reviews, but not often.

The mid tier foods (mystery meat stew, organ stew, flavoursom sauce) seem to split pretty evenly with getting middling and high reviews with only the occasional low.

And end of the line finished items get mostly high reviews and occasional middling ones which seems to average to 80 nanites.

Also, if you go through 2-3 food items quickly, the Nanites reward indicator will add them together when you do it too fast for it to fade out. I think this is the reason for some of the high numbers you're seeing. It is the accumulation of the last few you gave him.

When I first started doing this, I would wait for the reward indicator to fade before doing the next one, and I'm pretty certain the highest you can get for one item is 120 nanites.

makes a lot more sense than "plank" jelly giving 400+ nanites

Remove all cooking except what you want to give him from your inventory.
And as the person above said, cooking is only really useful for nanites from Cronus and, of course, selling for money.

Cronus can magically pluck objects out of any inventory. Available choices may be manipulated by moving the food around (splitting stacks where possible) before initiating conversation. If your backpack is filled with individually-wrapped cakes then cake is more likely to be an option.

I think.

Instancing and player location may also be factors. Should the options be not to your liking, warp somewhere else and try again.

Bake fifty cakes, put one cake in each slot and this happens:

You could be carrying ten full stacks of bait around at all times; it still happens.

I did this and it worked, removed anything food related and left the two items i wanted in my exosuit. Problem solved.
There's a full food guide here if anyone wants it - easy to understand, in stages & in picture form:
