Moving horizontally with a jetpack - how?
I see people moving sideways (not up) with their jetpacks in Youtube videos. How do you do that? I can't figure it out.

its called boosting. you need to melee and then hit jetpack with good timing. to get the most distance you need to continually tap jetpack while moving in a rhythm.

just google no mans sky boosting and watch a short video to get a sense of it. the timing is hard to explain but its like a 1/4 to 1/2 second after you hit melee you hit jetpack while constantly moving forward.

essentially you are carrying the forward momentum that is generated in the short time melee is active, so you are extending that momentum with the jetpack, if that helps you wrap your head around the timing you want to hit jetpack at the peak of the speed boost from the melee

There is also the rocket boots module. Makes that easy to do, but I find it hard to climb with them. Kind of a love/hate relationship with them.

in my experience the rocket boots module is a waste of an inventory slot. they make things feel awkward to me and the slot is better served with a movement or jetpack upgrade module. if you stack the max of those in both inventory and tech slots you can boost for an extremely long distance... easily over 1KM. once you get the timing down for boosting it becomes easy and second nature.

Its also often called shoulder boosting and sometimes melee boosting/jetting.
Be very-very careful about doing it in Permadeath mode.

that is also a very good point, you can most definitely kill yourself with fall damage doing this. its not always "fall" damage, its just damage from velocity. running into terrain or objects moving at high speed will also kill you.

always save 10-20% of your jetpack fuel to slow yourself down at the end of the boost to be safe

Those who try it in permadeath mode, well we've all learned the hard way one time. :D

Wait I wonder if OP saw a video of run+reload glitch where avatar went up hill at right time and would have appeared to fly horizontally at supersonic speeds?
If so then I can confirm run+reload glitch is outright deadly in survival and permadeath modes.

That is something I really do need to practice on. Tried it before, but never with any success. Kinda like the glitch building, something I could just never get the hang of. But I can ever get the hang of boosting, the rocket boots will be just a memory very quick. They ruin wall climbing for me.

Hmmm, maybe I didnt even think of that at first. That is harder to do and more dangerous i wouldnt really recommend that for general travel

Found a video that shows shoulder boosting for OP.
It also shows the running glitch which I suggest using with extreme caution and only in normal mode or creative mode.

do yourself a favor and take the time to learn boosting. you wont regret it. it saves SO much time and hassle during daily travel that the 10 minutes it takes to practice and learn it will pay for itself many times over in the long run.

when i first started i saw people doing it and was slightly confused at first but it didnt take long at all to learn and made such a positive impact on my experience with the game.

Very True and that video the guy even says don't do it in permadeath or it will kill (your avatar).
But he does explain and demonstrate a normal shoulder boost.

Hehe... well, I was just about to boot into game to do some stuff. Maybe I'll give that a try again, since I have nowhere to go for at least two more weeks...

yeah, even he was having trouble with it idk maybe i just have a knack for the timing it wasnt hard for me to get consistent with shoulder boosting at all. he does say it well though you are basically "leaning" into the boost. and tapping the jetpack rather than holding usually yields better results, depending on terrain of course.

terrain plays a large part in the reload boosting as well. I have a lot harder time with that, maybe its cause i use M+K over controller but whatever. I would only do it if i had the area scouted and knew where i was going was safe, like a long flat trip back to the ship or something.

Have you tried on one of those low grav planets yet lol.
Also found if I do either shoulder boost or the glitch and am flying over water to keep holding M+K keys down and just gradually splash into water for a supersonic torpedo-like experience... until I hit something down there lol.

No, i dont think i have been on a low grav planet before. sounds interesting though lol
