any way to mark visited systems
can't recall the direction I took and want to fly back to a once know system, now I'm wondering, even though I believe it isn't possible, if there is a way to get back to once visited systems?

In space map, you can press "tab", and you can see with an "x", the nearest planets already visited. This is your question?

The scanner in the galactic map only has a range of about 500 light years from where the camera is positioned, so move the camera towards the part of the galaxy you want to scan. It will also only mark the last 8 or 10 systems you discovered, even if you've discovered every star system for a hundred light years in all directions.

yes, if you mean the nearest system, yes okay now it works, was wondering, because it just kept on searching

so lets say I fly back to the 10th last, it won't show me the 11th one?

Nope. Only if the 11th is so far away that the others wont show up on scanner.

Pre FU I'd discovered about 80 systems in a local area of space, centered around a home system with a planet covered in gold crystals. Figured that once base building came along that would be a good planet to start. The majority of the systems were all within 100 light years of that system. Whenever I left it I'd jump to the closest star first, add a waypoint in the map to the home system, and then jump to new undiscovered systems from there.

Once I got bored of exploring nearby systems and jumped about 1000 light years away. Shortly after I accidently sold a stack of materials, so reloaded the latest saved game, which deleted my waypoint in the galactic map which lead back to my home system. I spent over an hour in the galactic map trying to scan for any system in the cluster, but couldnt find a one. 80 systems 1000 light years away is a needle in a haystack.

Eventually managed to track down another player system I'd seen before and knew was 700 light years left (looking at the galactic core) of my home system. Was able to find my way back from there.

All of which begs the question; How can you 'design' a game like this with NO decent navigation system? How and WHY?

Think when European ships, they tried to get far across the oceans. Without having references of where they went, without having maps made.

You have systems grouped into regions, but there aren't maps that tell you where each region is.

Just as if you are in the middle of the ocean, without direction and without maps.

Its not the good way, when you make long distances, and you need or you like to return. But now you have the base system. If you have a base, you can teleport back.

isn't there a portal mod? I guess so

Not a very good example, they didn't have the technology then. We have the technology to make detailed star maps within our galaxy and even in others. Why would that ability be lost in the future when we can actually travel between stars? Makes no sense.

guess it's like always, somebody has an idea, and everything gets structured around the idea, a narrow sight. like you have a theory and the terms in this theory demand a certain outlook on things.

here it was something like the journey to the middle of the galaxy, rest isn't important, noone will ever fly back, just onward, guess that was there thought.

I don't know. This is HG idea. I prefer a good galaxy map, too. Like the paper maps. Up view, with the same colours than the normal galaxy map, in each region. And your visited systems with a little aura (gold or silver aura for example). And the possibility to see a line between your visited systems. (your path). ^^

I know, the normal galaxy map is not x and y. We have z too. But i think its possible put all systems in a x,y map. I think.

elite dangerous for example has bookmarking, and searching of systems per name. but well anyway

I played this game fot a number of hours when it came out, I couldn't accept that a spaceship could travel the universe and yet not be able to navigate somewhere it's already been with ease. The first thing any explorer learns is how to retrace their steps. I have not and will not play it again until they fix this.

Yes, we need a better navigation system.
