Farming technique
Hey all. I had a base with a farm but it got wiped out and I never got heavily back into nms until now.

How much has farming changed? I was playing before next hit and I had a general plot that I was crafting numerous items. Wasn't maxing out anything.

With the blueprints changes and such what should I be aiming for?

Thanks.

I would suggest you start with circuit boards because you need them for Stasis Devices, after you get a few of those going add in Gamma weed and coprite -- for the lubricant to make living glass. For Circuit boards you need Frostwart, star bulb, solanium and cactus flesh. Go easy on the cactus flesh because each plant gives you 100, go heavy on star bulb because you only get 25 from each plant. use the biodomes -- they are the best at CBs. I do a lot of farming. Also you can buy all these plants at trading posts from NPC pilots as well as the secondary item needed to plant them, except for the pyrite needed for cactus flesh and the uranium needed for gamma weed.

This is my basic circuit board farm on my series I Did It My Way, 8 star bulb, 1 cactus flesh, 3 solanium and 2 forstwart -- not exact measurments but solanium and cactus flesh take 15 hours, star bulb takes 5 and frostwart takes 1 hour, so it works out in the end

there is also coprite and gamma weed growing and I think one or two empty domes

I am not sure that Farming has changed that much. Nowadays tho, the Trays have to be kept charged: a disadvantage. And you now have Transmat units: an advantage.

I originally had a very large planet-side farm with Trays (before charging needed). When I gained my Freighter, I moved my farm there. Still no Transmats or charging Trays. I mainly harvested Pearls to trade for cash. I didn't do a big manufacturing / conversion thing.

Now, after NEXT dropped, I use the Transmats to teleport to biome specific mini-farms where the plants are in the dirt ... no trays.

Many ways to do this.

bio-domes no longer require living glass to be build, just regular glass so always use those. You can also build in every plant spot now even if a door is present, although i dont recommend using the one directly in front of the door.

Try to make each biodome produce a self contained item, with ~15 plants available a full room harvest should let you build 1-2 living glass or explosives for example.

Also keep in mind roaming about planets is *SIGNIFICANTLY* more rewarding than it used to be. Farming has gone from the only serious option for making units to one of a handful. Just roaming about planets scanning animals and digging up crashed satelites and bones is plenty profitable, or you could do guild missions. Passive income from frigate missions helps a lot too.

What you need to farm to produce the 2 most profitable items in the game. I went the Fusion Ignitor route but it's worth the same as the Stasis Device:

I still like this graphic. It isn't as detailed, but most times I just want a quick reference.

It is a lot easier to find and reference since you can find it in the Product page in the wiki.

I'm a bit partial to circuit boards, but it depends upon how you play and where you are at in the game.. I'm working on a freighter farm that I think will fill 48 ship slots twice a day. Not that it is important much to me. I have the freighter and ships that I want. After that, money really doesn't matter.

Making the 16mil items isnt really time efficient, given the extra overhead of getting iridesite or that other one.

Just stick with the 8mil items if your farming, or even the previous tier if you want to keep things simple.

Best option is probably to combine farming with doing guild missions, since that will supply a large bulk of the gas created products, and its more interesting anyway.

If you stock up the high end materials from frigate missions, the iridesite and gas dependant materials are pretty much covered. Also, some of those intermediary materials can be 'farmed' from pirates or just outright bought from NPC ships in a space station, so looking for a high economy system and noting what is sold could help.

But NMS isn't Stardew Valley, and you really should limit farming to making 10 (at most 15) of one kind of plant based item. Partly for lag concerns for a given base (focusing on one item per base) but also for not getting into a newbie trap of sorts and working the fun out of the game by obligating yourself to have to farm hundreds of plants.

A big game changer for farming is that you can have a base anywhere. I tend to do node farming where I have a base near the resource I want. It started with glass...seems like I always need more for some project or another.

You do have to install a teleporter in the base.

I use them as non-traditional farming nodes. Frostwort base, Starbulb ranch...etc. Still fun to have a traditional farm, but not sure the mega farms are still necessary-unless you just like that.

I like to find a "perfect" planet of each major type, then build a base at a cool spot with a nice overlook. At the bottom I spell out getbent824 by planting the indigenous plant, say, starbulbs on a parafinium planet. Plant them as tight as possible and it gives you a huge harvest when you need them. No biodome or hydroponics tray needed.

Never build a farm on a freigther like me. This are 300+ plants of each. The freigther is extremly buggy.

Wow, helluva project. My pre-NEXT Freighter farm wasn't as big, but was two floors. Lots of problems with disappearing floors, disappearing trays, fall thru, etc. Nowadays with Teleporters, I like the biome specific mini-farms. I just set up a NipNip Farm which still needs trays. I used flooring but no walls or roof.

The fps are ok. 45-60 but the problem is, that everybody who run into the freighter will fall out and die in space. Slow down and wait until the base has built up solves the problem
