ALSO, turn off tether mode in the general options. It makes flying much more precise.
These 2 changes help a lot, but its not a flight sim. And I agree the lackage of compass sucks :D
With the keys 1-2-3 you can change or unlock air targets, other changes have been discussed above. That's plenty enough for this game which is not a realistic representation of space.
If you want a good space combat simulator, go play Evochron Legacy.

We know, we all know... I don't know why you find this fact so outrageous. Not all flying games are meant to be flight sims.

There was a mod I used over at Nexus that helped a lot with the feel of flight, but haven't played a while and mods like that often get broken with frequent patches. Perhaps start there OP...
