Most negative reviews are old now
Is the game worth a buy at 30$?
I've wanted what they promised 2 years ago. Is it here?

Depends on what you think they promised. At that price get it no matter.
That's subjective. It depends what you really want.

Spoo, what I really wanted was a single player which could meet other players if I wanted, where you could travel places no one had ever been and have a depth of procedure generated worlds which made sense from a perspective of what could exist together.

And space cats, little cats with space helmets from the 50s.

NMS is a nice game, but you should still approach it as if it was a beta version of an indie game. Other than that, it seems like it is worth the $30, since I can see free updates continuing for several more years. Not everything that was promised has been put in, but a few key promises have finally been fulfilled, or at least in the works; with HG seeming dedicated to getting the rest, but that will take time.

The gameplay after the NEXT update was nice, and gave me a solid 100 hours of game time, with fiddling around with things, checking out the smaller content patches, and the Community Events making it last 100 to 200 more hours longer.

I'm just waiting for The Beyond update to hit so I can start exploring what it has to offer.

Obviously if the game doesn't work for you in the first hour, stop playing and look up what others have said has been a technical issue with running it. That way you stay within the refund window Steam offers. There are some known issues with AMD graphics cards.

I bought it now (because of the sale), but will be waiting to play until the VR update comes out this summer.

The game seems to run just fine. I'm trying ti figure out the crafting system. Do we get to build bases? And can we change the in cockpit view to see ourselves outside the ship?
MechWarden Mar 31, 2019 @ 9:55pm
yeah, you can build a base. There is a section of quest line dedicated to introducing and unlocking much needed base features.

I don't think the windows allow you to view yourself inside your own ship, even in Picture Mode.

.

Either Beta edition of a good AAA game, or Full release of an indie game. It's certainly miles ahead of indie beta games, but is lacking that personal touch of good AAA games.

There are a raft of average AAA games that it beats though.

As for the historic negative reviews holding back its rating, that's still fair. Overall rating means just that, although at the rate the game is going 3-5 more updates and it'll be pushing positive overall. Even when it had a negative rating, it was only just below 50% approval. It only took one update to sway it into mixed.

I guess I hold higher standards and just expect more from something labeled as AAA, since I can't even come close to calling NMS a AAA game. It is an Indie game that is either late alpha or in mid stage beta, depending on what one considers is a complete game. I can't see any high budget game releasing in a state NMS is in now, even after updates adding in some much promised features. I can see, and have seen, AAA games release with game breaking bugs, but otherwise most of them are much better in quality than NMS. That's not to say a AAA game doesn't get rushed and is a piece of crap because of wide spread flaws, but those aren't as common.

From what I understand, NMS was effectively made by a bunch of relative newbies to the genre, and it shows, and shows all over the place. No AAA title is made by a team lacking in that much experience. HG maybe getting better, but they still have a long way to go. That said, for a bunch of newbies, they made one outstanding world generation system!
