Voice Chat - Best Method?

Hey guys, my buddy and I just bought NMS and plan on playing together once a week. But unless there has been an update, the built-in chat in NMS doesn't seem to have what we want (ie a way to mute without going into a menu). I can (and prob my friend too) use macros if that's even possible, but from the 3 hours I played last night, a series of keyboard commands probably wouldn't work (correct me if I'm wrong). Is there a better, free chat program whose hotkeys would work while in-game? We both have Discord, but haven't used it for voice chat before and I don't know if the hotkeys for it would keep working while in-game. My headset doesn't have an easily-usable mute function. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Turn off the in-game voice and use the voice chat from the Steam > Friends window.

If with friends, using Discord is typically better. You can set it to activate via a certain sound threshold (set as default) or do Push To Talk on any key you want. Discord is pretty easy in terms of voice chat. Discord is a text and voice chat service for gamers. It will work while NMS is running in the foreground.

But if you are going to use the in-game chat, a good gaming headset, one with an easy to access on/off switch on the mic, is preferred. Removing background noise, TV, wearing headphones to stop game sound bleeding through, etc is pretty much required to keep others from being ticked off and muting you from there end.
