AFAIK yes. You don't have to be in the same party, but of course you have to have multiplayer activated in the options. However, due to the fact that there are billions of planets, but only 30k players or so online at the same time, you probably won't ever come across another player coincidentally.

The only way you are going to randomly encounter other players in their actual form is if you are in the same game. otherwise they will just appear as an ORB. This has already been tested extensively by multiple people including myself.

So no, true random encounters are not possible. You wont ever jump into a system, land on a planet, find another players base, and see them running around or be able to attack them or vise versa.

The only exception to this is if you they are in your current game.

Cheers

That's disappointing, but it makes sense. Wouldn't want some rando exploring and randomly finding and destroying my base.

I was dissapointed as well. I was hoping to be able to randomly encounter people like a true open world game. Dont get me wrong I have loved this game from the beginning. Granted no its not for everyone and it had a bad launch; however, its stil a great game. NEXT adds a lot fo great content. But it is essentially drop in drop out coop with some other multiplayer ISH features. This may change down the raod to include random encounters in limited instances, but at the current moment it wont happen.

Fingers crossed though! :D

I was playing with a friend, and yes a random appeared in our solar system, we went to check on him and he appeared as an orb be we could see his player icon and nametag
