Should I play survival or normal
I want a challenge however I don't want gouge my eyes out challenging. Is survival mode fair or is it still unforgiving?

My first Survival start was actually easier then my normal start thanks to some nearby sodium plants. Other then that it just was a fact that hazzard protection took longer to restore in ship and caves and fuel costs where higher.

Course random starts are random so your mileage may very.

Survival if you like that feeling of urgency you get from other survival games.
play suvival if u hate ur self :p

Survivial is fair, from the point where you will understand how to get carbon/oxygen/sodium. And how (and when) to recharge your items.

So you can die few times while learning the game, but after that it's nothing special)

Play Normal. You will enjoy more the best aspects of the game and avoid the most grindy. Some games shine with the huge challenge, the strenght of this one is in other aspects.

Survival is brutal for about 60 minutes or less. Then it's just a tedious resource drain. It takes so much O2, Na, etc to do anything, it's just annoying. Only reason I'm bothering with it is for achievement hunting.

It's really not bad. The first few hours yes sucks, and is hard. However within 5 hours I've been to 6 planets and 2 solar systems and have a base. The feeling of overcoming the challenge I find fun. It's getting easier as I go as well. I'd say do survival for a funner experience. I played normal at launch and found it way to easy.

Normal for beginners, imo. You'll spend like 12 hours getting to know the game and then die in your first fight with enemy ships.

It's just tedious. There's nothing hard about it. It's just refilling your bars more often with more resources. It's less "survival" and more "recharge all your gear twice as often". Of course, in leveling that criticism I feel obligated to offer a solution, but I don't really have one. The game's really just designed to be easy and accessible. We didn't even *have* survival mode at release, it was only included for people asking for something harder. But - as I said - I don't really find it /harder/ just much, much more tedious (cue discussion on what constitutes difficulty and what distinguishes it from tedium).

I just don't want every planet I go to to feel like a walk in the park. Does normal mode have dangerous planets I guess is my big question

Yea, most every planet has environmental dangers, and they only get worse on harder systems. Your suit has protection, but you can (will need to) upgrade it. Normal mode isn't creative/casual. Though it's not like this game is intended to be extremely hard anyway.

Okay good like I said not looking for dark souls or extra grinding I just want a bit of a challenge every now and again like landing on a planet that is a complete hellhole of nasty ♥♥♥♥. Didn't want to play normal if it was going to deprive me of that

Well to each his own as I found the first hour pretty hard. Having to run and find cover while also finding the correct resources without running out was difficult and I died a couple of times. Also once the base is going resources are easy to come by for me now, and it doesn't feel tedious. But I am a patient man so I suppose that's why.

You will be deprived of that because of the insane amount of resources you will own and thus not have to worry about the harsh environment if you play normal.
