If you love grinding for hours to do even the simplest things, that is your dream mode.
Otherwise, stay away.
The main differences are that on survival sentinels are more aggressive on many planets, you lose your inventory when you die. When you die in space you will awake crash landed (like in the beginning) with your ship needing repair. Resources are supposed to be more scarce but to be honest, I find plenty of resources everywhere.
Last time I played was during original release and a few hours after the foundation update. A lot has changed but I had no issue jumping right into survival. I haven't died once in over 20 hours in my save. It's not really that difficult but some things might be more tedious like refueling your ship. On normal you get 4 starts with a fully fueled launcher, on survival only 2 starts so you need to refuel more often.
Depending on how much time you want to invest (this is a time-hungry game anyway), you probably will want to spend around 8 hours on "Normal" before playing on Survival.
Work through the main quest lines as quickly as you can. You learn a lot about the game, and you gain a lot of necessary items through that process.
