Eventually, go to a station, find multitool upgrades and get the grade S and A versions.
With those alone you boost your analysis visor settings so that you're getting 250k units and up for almost every creature you scan. (the upgrades give you a total of like +10000% to Flora and Fauna scan values, respectively) as well as increasing you scanner's range by like 40% and the cooldown by about 15ish%.
I'd screenie it but I just started over due to the fecking big ball save corruption that apparently finally just got fixed in this morning's patch. :/
When buying general tech in the first section you will need to purchase something for new stuff to show up. You will want everything in the first category of the vendors anyways but you can prioritize some what in the main modules.
You can now stack the same upgrade types, so you can have three S class scanner upgrades and they all boost each other, you end up with 100ks for a plant.
It's c, b, a, and s in quality, and yes as above, stacking works with all upgrades.
Just check the multi-tool vendor at every station you visit for the upgrade modules.
