Can't pick up the whispering eggs while using gamepad

I am playing with a gamepad and after I shoot the outer part to produce the egg I never get a prompt to pick it up.

Usually when interacting with something I get a prompt to hit the X button but not with these eggs. Some things I have to fiddle around to get the X to show up, move just slightly and it goes away, move back slightly and it comes back. It's driving me nuts, anyone else having this problem?

No the goal is to shoot at the whispering eggs /s

They seem a bit more difficult to interact with compared to other items but that's because it rolls around then you get swarmed b those creatures. I couldn't pick them pick them up at all with those things attacking me.
