You got that fixed, and can see waypoints now, and that's the important thing.
Didn't pop up for me either had to use my head and figure out how to get back to my ship lol.
You have to craft carbon nanotubes. You won't just find them lying around, though I think you can buy them from traders on space stations. You haven't gotten that far yet, so you must craft them.
Go into your inventory, click on any empty square in the cargo area, and it will bring up a window with all the blueprints you have available. One of them will be carbon nanotubes. Click on it to create one. I think it takes 50 Carbon? Don't quote me on the amount, though.
Then, use the nanotubes to make an analysis visor and then you will always seen an icon for your ship and also how far away it is from you on your HUD from that point on.
The instructions clearly tell you to install the scan visor and scan some things. Follow the instructions. The visor is what enables the HUD compass.
