how to mine?

Just started this game a few days ago, I am now trying to find copper, Im lead to an icon I dig everywhere and come up with no copper? I use my scanner and dont see anything but its telling me its right under my feet

What am I doing wrong?

You have to upgrade your multitool with a terraforming addon. Standard laser only mine plants and rocks, not the ground. It should say so when you aim at the ore.
If you do have the addon then you have to switch to it.

Should work then.... is the Ground Metallic Colored?

I have been on planets where it says a resource is and it isn't. I would try a different planet if you can.

I've found copper deposits while in caves a couple of times. Not sure if that would show a marker when using the visor above ground though.
Usually I just fly over the landscape looking for deposits. Most of the surface deposits are big enough to see from the air.
You use more launch fuel, but it beats walking a long whay only to find the wrong type of mineral deposit.

i dont know but I dug a nice huge pit around this icon pretty deep, I didnt know what I was looking for but it didnt change at all

I'm having the same issue. I've used the terrain tool enough to dig a hole almost to the center of the planet and haven't found any copper in the hole yet. The scanner says I'm at the destination. If I go to the bottom of the hole the scanner shows the location is above me. In the open sky.

BBA I just ended up abandoning that and searching for more, I also found this stuffs generally above the surface and not below.

You can see copper with your visor scanner from the surface. You can then mine it from the surface standing on the rim using the terrian excavator. They look like shiny metallic mounds from the distance.

yea you dont go underground for it, youll see it on the surface at least from what ive seen.

As stated above. It will look something like the screenshot below. And afaik, they don't spawn below the surface. Though at this stage and given some of the odd bugs, I would not surprised if it did.
