What's the best way to farm navigation data?

I know you can find little pillar structures on planets that give you a lot but they are rare and the cube/prism things on space stations that sometimes give you a navigation data don't respawn. Is there any really good method for farming these that I don't know about?

They can also be randomly found in shelters. On a tables in one of the narrow buildings that look like trailers/bunkers, there's often a cube/prism or a button and it will give you either nanites, units, shields or nav data (randomly selected).

What do you do with navigation data exactly? I have like 7 on me that I've has since the beginning, haven't sold them, seemed important, never really used them for anything. Aside from the signal booster, that is, is there anything else without trading that is actually useful with these?

You can use them to find ancient ruins which can have loot worth up to 18m, you can find Monoliths with them, crashed ships, locked buildings with blueprints to tech worth millions. Yeah, they are PRETTY useful.
