It's a game in the survival genre. This is the typical gameplay loop in MOST survival games. The genre is always like this. Always has been, probably always will be. If you need more of a structure or alot of pre-set goals... this isnt the game for you. Granted, there is a storyline and all that, but games like this usually encourage you to come up with your own goals.
You set your own goals.
2nd: the game is and does as expected - you're a space tourist/explorer and can either explore the universe on your own accord or do various missions and quests.
3rd: if you're bored doing these activities, then this game might not be the right one for you; i'd advise you to stop playing (not meaning this in a bad way) and find another game which scratches your itch better.
That is okay though bud.
Life is pointless :)
You upgrade so you can explore further and faster, build the greatest base on the most stunning planet and then try and find a better one :)
Build up a trading fleet and trade across star systems, become the richest player with the most expensive toys, the way some business men do.
As stated above it is a sand box almost without limits in some respects.
